I did this nearby, short loop yesterday. The colours are almost there, #24 was nice
If I read your post right, it sounds like you're discounting Newfoundland & Ontario. There's a helluva lot in our own backyard and NFLND has a lot to offer & should be included in any "epic" road trip. imho :)
I'd suggest maybe cutting south at Riviere-du-Loop on the way home & follow the St.John's River into New Brunswick, then into Maine, ect and cross at Kingston.
If you haven't seen this here's a link from my trip in 2011-Cabot trail, NFLND, East Coast...
It comes down to riding styles, when you choose a lane where you feel the most comfortable. I was also surprised it took you that long to get on the hwy, I could'nt wait to get on there and let 'er rip! Try different lanes and speeds & see how YOU like the pace and flow.

Bump, any offer accepted
A very early Joe Rocket Ballistic Series, 0.0? ha. Has the full sleeved liner that also serves as a light "jacket" on it's own, w/ pockets. I'm still wearing out this one, not very waterproof anymore.
Now it's a Vanson MK2 Sportrider
If you're going solo, take the bike!
I did it solo in the Summer of 2011 & IMHO it would'nt have been nearly the same experience had I done it w/ a car.
The one where I can roll up, fill the tank, walk in & pay.
None of this walking in & leaving a $20, filling up, and walking back in for change.
Cash is king, I do'nt wanna see gas on my cc or debit statements, maybe it's just me.
