Don't stress about it too much. You made a mistake, but you know what you did wrong and you'll learn a lot from it.
You did a second (and unnecessary) shoulder check while already turning, which is why you went wide. When you turn like that your body will naturally start to stand the bike up...

Buzz thing didn't stand out or otherwise to me. Maybe I'm not picky enough but my take-away impression from riding the 300 was it felt very similar to my 250. Don't know about the clearance thing, it was a pretty chill demo ride.
Maybe he crashed it and replaced the fairings himself. Maybe also why he was willing to ride it over for you? Though I think a lot of people would offer that anyway.
Nice bike, I'm up for a ride whenever (usually evenings or weekends). Waiting on a part for my bike right now though (ninja 250R), but some later time is good.
Call up about insurance from the start... see how much a 300 might run you. You might need to stick to to a cbr125 or perhaps a 250 depending on how much insurance costs you. It's pretty easy to get some quotes.
