I got both my kids PW50's, I got a Z50 when I was young but they haven't made those in years. I'd say get him whatever you can score a deal on and you're comfortable putting him on, he'll remember that bike forever. Pretty sure you can set a governer on the PW50 to limit him as he grows used...

Personally I wish they would make lane splitting legal here. Stats say it's safer, and if it's legal we might hear less whining about it. As for the shoulder, not a great idea especially at warp speed. It's for emergency vehicles nevermind cluttered with debris

Curious how you made out OP? I'd guess battery connections or regulator/rectifier as others suggested. I've had both issues.
