Good advice above so far. Here are my thoughts if I were in your shoes:
1. Pass the M1 test.
2. Buy gear.
3. Take a motorcycle safety course. I recommend RTI.
4. Pass the M2 test.
5. Get the bike checked out by someone you trust.
6. Depending on the outcome, decide whether or not to get it...
Just chiming in. I'm a stalker of this thread and interested in a Legend's centre or Lakeview Park meet up point. I'm a beginner rider, on a beginner bike, and ride in a civil manner.

@motorchick: I hope you can overcome your fear. I overcame mine by accepting the risks, taking a motorcycle safety course, wearing protective and hi-viz gear, starting with a small bike with ABS, practicing in empty lots first before moving on...
I recommend this one. It's simple, not too loud and is affordable. Do not get anything shorter than 18" and don't remove the baffles.

That was an unsafe turn made by that SUV which clearly put you in danger and I think it's definitely a ticketable offense. Good reaction on your part though and glad that you made it out safely.
