    Winter storage with no garage

I built an 8x8 shed from a Home Hardware kit. The kit was $500 + $50 to drop it off on a skid on my driveway. I had to paint and buy some tools and odds and ends but it was a done deal for under $1k. It's where my bike resides in winter. Took a weekend to build. You could do an 8x10 or 8x12...

    Goo Gone Alternative

Crap, I hope not... next time I'll put a smiley at the end.

    Goo Gone Alternative

I use brake fluid. It's surprisingly effective.

    getting ready for winter

Not a bad idea, but not necessary. I've winterized without draining the carbs and it turned out fine. Make sure you mix fuel stabilizer in the fuel, and store the bike with a full tank to avoid condensation. Run the bike under a few different conditions with the stabilized fuel - run it with...

Any tips on how to dress for colder weather riding?

I wish that were true! Then I could've saved a few hundred bucks on a mesh jacket. Most of the durable textile motorcycle gear that is non-mesh is high-denier (high-thread-count) nylon. At least the stuff I have is thick and heavy, and came from the factory with a durable water-repellent...

Any tips on how to dress for colder weather riding?

I meant the outer layer - textile moto gear vs. leather gear. I find it's a bit warmer. I think the joe rocket stuff I have has some kind of water/wind treatment in it that has wind blocking effect.

Any tips on how to dress for colder weather riding?

As an outer layer, yes. I've ridden down to -2 by layering below my Ballistic pants and jacket. Usually, for up top, I'll wear a merino or polypro/weave long sleeve shirt and then a soft shell over top. For my pants, I have a set of fleece-lined tights or Merino tights that I'll wear below...

Any tips on how to dress for colder weather riding?

I like merino wool a lot. MEC has merino sweaters and long underwear on for about $60 each. It's expensive but very nice and effective at keeping in heat. In colder weather, I tend to go more for textiles (in my case, Joe Rocket Ballistic) than leathers.

    DIY motorcycle rack

Yep, welders are not cheap. Sometimes you can find them used for a bit cheaper, and an arc/stick welder would be cheaper than MIG. When the welders get bigger, you also have to think about electrical service and make sure it's on its' own circuit. If you would like to learn, most colleges...

    DIY motorcycle rack

Hey, glad you made it home safe! I wouldn't promote the concept 'tho. And it was nice to go back and think about my degree... I stopped short of dusting off my solid mechanics texts because that would probably irritate my wife on a Saturday night. I'm actually thinking about similar stuff...

    DIY motorcycle rack

Anyways, to break it down... Good: should not crack ever... So-so: Users have found cracks after carrying rated loads repeatedly: Frightens me!

    DIY motorcycle rack

I would be concerned with the 1 x 1 aluminium, especially hand-bent. Motorcycles have a lot of vibrations, and bending that thin section of aluminium without annealing (to re-crystalizing the grain structure) isn't a good idea as well. Whenever you see the mounting hardware for a top box, you...

Help me choose a 2nd bike...

Yep, I can vouch for that! I love mine. Lots of torque, pretty good handling, comfortable, makes awesome noises, a bit heavy but carries it low... it checks all the boxes.

Help me choose a 2nd bike...

I've heard FZR400's are uncomfortable, peaky, barely-streetable torture racks... ...which is why I want one! I think that for the OP, the SV650 is the tailor-made bike. FWIW, I'm 6'2" and in my 3rd yr of riding. I started out with a Bandit 600 and recently upgraded to a VFR800. Both are...

DIY Garage Workstation on the cheap

The tablet mount is sweet, but you need to go one step farther... and get a sound system. Use a line out cable from your tablet, and connect to some speakers and an amp/receiver. $100 used should get you going... sometimes I see crazy deals, like Paradigm Titan or Atom speakers for $80. Old...

    another car thread

I come from the school of thought where you buy used... my folks weren't wealthy (or car people) growing up. I got my Accord five years old for exactly half the MSRP. When we bought the '05 Forester, we almost bought a new Versa instead for $17,400 out the door (manual, with AC and PDL/PW)...

    another car thread

We bought a used Forester lately for my wife - the 2.5X model, auto, mid-2000's. For what it is, the fuel mileage is fine and only slightly worse than my 5-speed 2001 Accord. I think if I had the Impreza sedan with the same powertrain, I'd be a bit more frustrated with the mileage. But for...

    Honda Confirms V4 Sportbike

So the gyst of this thread is... Honda announces a 'back to their roots' high-end top-secret V4 sportbike; Certain users do not care because they are in love with Aprilia and the RSV4 is the last bike anyone needs to make; Thread gets derailed... I'm at least interested in seeing the thing...

New Stats about Canadian Households/Families came out - Pretty Interesting Stuff

This is a really interesting thread and I'm really enjoying it. I think it all comes down to priorities. If you are one of the people saying, "dammit I can't afford a house" and there's a brand new $12k gixxer on your driveway... I'm sorry, but that's half a down payment for real estate or...

Interesting Book - 'The Upper Half of the Motorcycle'

I found a really interesting book about motorcycling, and am getting into it. It's about the mental and physiological aspects of motorcycling. http://www.amazon.com/The-Upper-Half-Motorcycle-Machine/dp/1884313752 Apparently it was published in German in the '90s and recently translated to...
