Speed camera update (Sept.11)

Do you have your can of spray paint ready?
Lol. Oh I'm going to get nailed. I've been driving on the road twice a day for 39 years not doing the posted 60km/h. (maybe 65 - 70) Now I'll have to concentrate to overcome my muscle memory. I'm doomed to fail at this at 5:30 am. I'll update soon.

Did they also drop the speed limit to increase revenue? 10 over isn't very profitable.

To avoid making two posts in a row, a niagara resident found another way to disable the camera. I'm not even sure if this is a crime. Maybe mischief or littering? There is no damage and there are no repairs required.

Cameras aren't installed yet. Will see if speed limit is changed. I've never seen or heard of any accidents at this location.

I always thought sticking a garbage bag over one would be interesting and not actually damage the unit. Smearing dog poop would also work! It would be shiity to clean up!

Her misuse of apostrophes should be a crime. She forgot to put one into guys and Falls.

Here we go. Douggie is working on legislation to ban speed cameras entirely. Fwiw, I'm not anti-speed camera. I think they can serve a useful purpose. However, government once again has perverted a good idea to straight fundraising with almost no connection to the stated purpose.

They took what could have been ok and turned it into a disaster. If the speed limits were left alone and the cameras set to a reasonable threshold it would have been fine. But no

Exactly. 20 over design speed in actual school zones when kids are around and I doubt there would be much opposition.

I’d be a little upset if they were still negotiating locations and revenue with a U.S. company.
I favour red light cameras, over speed cameras, in the sense that you either did it or didn’t, and many of the dangerous situations are at intersections.

I just feel this is the wrong move, if it's a straight up ban, removal of speed camera's. Also the political angle is very reminiscent of the 90's.

Also my gut is staying, once they start removing them, some kid is going to be run down, and we'll be right back here.
Though they do say something about implementing road infrastructure..... we'll see.

Agreed.

IMO, there needed to be a process for declaring a 'community safety zone' and justification for lowering speed limits. Not the 'won't someone think of the children' argument.

You could only place cameras in community safety zones. They were self-declared without oversight though. I really expected a municipality (my money was on Brampton) to declare all lands within their purview as a community safety zone. Afaik, none went that far.

As for justification to lower speed limits, those have been a farce for decades. Engineers say one thing, councillors implement their own reality (see all the 80 km/h farm roads in hamilton posted at 50).

Is there a limit as to how much the speed can drop on local roads? Practically it’s been in 20 kph chunks, most places I’ve seen, but I don’t know if that’s because of a regulation. One place it dropped from 80 to 50; people complained and the 50 sign was eventually moved to the other side of an intersection. It would have been a great speed trap, but I never saw one there.

I don't think so. Other than speed limit must be a multiple of 10. IIRC Toronto was planning on making most school zones 30. I'm not sure if they did that. I've never seen a speed limit below 30 but afaik, it's not prohibited, it's just such a stupid idea that politicians haven't gotten there yet.

Speed camera in Alton is gone, along with its warning signs. Probably means that's the camera they're planning to put in the Forks ... if douggie doesn't stop the whole thing first.

Interesting. I was there on Sunday and wondered… the warning signs were still up but I didn’t see where the actual camera was anymore. I figured they were plying games and moved it to a hiding spot behind a sign or something.

I was told Forks is up

I may scout it later today. IIRC the "coming soon" signs are supposed to be up for something like 60 or 90 days before the camera goes live, and that hasn't passed.

Edit after doing some digging: supposed to be 90 days according to Peel Region's own website, and it's been just over 30 days. I know folks here caught the installation of those signs within a day.

Status: "Coming soon" signs still there, no camera-box observed. Maybe it's in for repair. The enclosure for the Alton one has been hit, beaten up, painted over, scraped clean, and become rusty to the extent that it was an eyesore.
