When I was looking at ranges around me a few years ago no one had any space at all Galt still has zero space so I can just shoot in the backyard and they blame it on the range cuz it's right beside it
'Just goes to show the popularity of shooting sports
The club's been there since 1954...
People buy/build houses nearby and THEN complain about the noise, trying to get the ranges shut down... (rolley eyes)
My club's constantly dealing with city folks who move to the country then try to have our ranges closed... They ought to sue their realtor for not letting them know they were buying a house near to a gun range.
Your example is something we've also dealt with... Someone hearing gun shots and ASSUMING it's coming from the club.
Uh... no, that's the local police lighting off with their MP5's in the local sand pit.. Why don't you go over there and tell them to knock it off... LoL.
The number of people that move to an area with something noisy and then immediately start complaining about the noise and how they paid for quiet is infuriating. The reason the place was cheaper was because there were some issues. Suck it up buttercup. Gun clubs are complicated. They used to have significant protection through grandfathering. That protection has been lost in most municipalities.
My club's municipality is very professional and neutral with our situation.
The club is and always has been very accommodating to the community around it.
I think the counselors. Even though they can't come right out and say it, see the complainers as whiney Karens who just want the club gone because they don't like it.
June 7th is national Range day... A day when many clubs open their doors to the public with organized events designed to introduce people to the shooting sports. Info should be available on all their websites.
Find a "general use" plot and knock yourself out. Of course, all written and unwritten rules of responsible shooting apply:
- Know what your backstop is and make sure ricochet is nonexistent or fully controlled.
- Don't shoot over trails, roads, hills or bodies of water.
- Don't shoot close to any residences or populated areas.
- Don't shoot if you don't have a clear view to your target.
- If you shoot with company, treat it as a shooting range with the established firing line, direction of fire and firearm handling rules.
- Etc., etc.
Gravel pits / quarries are the best, especially abandoned ones or those you have the owner's permission to shoot at.
Go for a ride north of Barrie and talk to locals and Conservation Officers. That's how I found a few very nice places to shoot (I can't tell you where they are, but I'll help you find your own).
No argument here. However, it's the only way to get official information on Crown Land, unless you fancy visiting your local MNR office or asking a Conservation Officer (I've done both and got more useful information from officers).
MNR officers are often sportsmen them selves and certainly know lots of shooters . The OPP office of your outside the GTA can also be helpful . They are both very happy to have you shooting in a safe manner in a safe place because they don’t want to have to talk to you later about being in a wrong place .
It depends on what I'm using...
The .22 is pretty effective out to about 75-100 yards.
With the .17HMR I can get 'em out at 200 yards, maybe a bit more.
I'd say that this trip most shots are presenting themselves inside 125 yards.
That said, once in a while there are shots made at distances where I'm like... "Damn Gaoler, you're awsome"
Keep in mind, 'targets are about the size of a small squirrel.
In case anyone is interested. I'm selling a firefield rapidstrike riflescope in unused condition. Bought in anticipation of building an AR15 but looks like that went down the drain. Selling for 325. Regular is 400. Again, unused condition, can't even use it on my 22lr weapon of war apparently.

In the process of bringing this back to life , ten gauge , American made ( with British import parts) . Not sure of exact date or maker yet either ,I’m guessing eighteen fourties’.
I’ll fire it first from ten ft away with a string .
I did some skeet shooting in California a couple weeks ago with the only shotgun I had available to me - my nephew's Benelli M3. I still did well enough, which has gotten me a little more serious about finally getting my own gun and membership at a club. I've lost track of all the old shops I used to visit (my favorite was the one on Hwy 7 and Jane, which I believe is long gone). I think Bass Pro/Cabella's is the only place I know of now. Lots of online places, but I'd like to see as many in person as I can. Any recommendations within a couple hours of the GTA?
