The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

I had a situation that was closer than I would like. Approaching a stop sign at a T junction, with a wooded area blocking view. Someone on a bicycle made a sweeping left turn (from my right, to oncoming me) cutting the corner of the junction by a lot. If I had been a second earlier, this could have been a bicycle-to-motorcycle collision, or maybe the cyclist would have had to straighten out ... and at the speed they were going, they would have been into the woods.

This week, A cyclist in barrie apparently blew a red light on a hill at high speed and tboned an suv. Cyclist lost bad and went to hospital. Bike is garbage. Suv has a dent.

This is why it'd be much better to be focusing on cars running reds, running stop signs, driving erratically, speeding through residential streets, etc... Bicycles may disobey signs, but when they do, they loose big time. When a car does it, the consequences for everyone else is much much higher.

Define "a lot".

Welcome to Waterdown. Those lines in the parking lots are messages for aliens.

And yet somehow the driver of the SUV will likely be blamed for this collision and possibly sued by the cyclist.

Traffic controls are there for everyone, including cyclists. If you disobey the posted signs and signals you risk the consequences of your actions. Fortunately in this case the only personal injuries are on the one who caused the collision. Unfortunately the SUV driver will probably have to pay to repair the damage to their vehicle because cyclists are not required to carry insurance, or even demonstrate that they know the rules of the road.

Though homeowners/renters insurance may apply. Depends on the policy, if any, the cyclist has.

How would the operator of a bicycle, e-bike, scooter etc. know they have to stop for signs, lights etc. Walk into the store, buy a machine and ride away. You don't even have to read a pamphlet.

Dents start at $3000 and if listed on Carfax another bunch of thousands in diminished value.
I'm not saying it won't be costly for the vehicle driver. Everybody loses because one person made a bad choice. I'd rather have a dent than my body smashed. Now, cyclist could just as easily have smoked a pedestrian and in those situations, the pedestrians often get the worst of it.

Just guessing but I'd stick with $3,000. Plus car rental. Add diminished value if put through insurance. Since the collision is on record insurance will likely find out anyway.

Did the bicyclist learn anything?

Did the parents learn anything?

Did the politicians learn anything or will it be just another public service announcement photo op about "Riding safe"

Rinse, repeat.

31 yo rider. Based on the bike, I'd lean towards lower income and riding for a purpose as opposed to recreation.
