Thats pretty sweet. Never knew RE started in 1901 as well. All this time I was under the impression that it was only Indian in 1901 and Harley- Davidson in 1903!

Is RPAL worth getting anymore? Are there still guns you can use with RPAL but not PAL or has the OIC locked them all up? If Carney follows JT's path, even PAL may shortly be a useless piece of paper sadly.

I think it’s worth an RPAL , incase an apocalyptic event changes everything. But if you just want to shoot skeet and trap get a PAL . There are other training opportunities aside from the RCMP listing . The instructor in my mind is not that important as long as they cover the safe handling / storage / dos and don’t to keep you safe and legal.
I find with many courses I have taken. The trainer is often passionate about what they are teaching so that’s nice . And sometimes you get a guy with a retirement gig that couldn’t teach a duck to swim , but less often.
Most skeet/ trap clubs now also have compulsory safety training for new members , just to keep the safe in safety. No shell goes in a gun till your on station, the gun is always pointed down field , wait thirty seconds after a miss fire . Old guard will straighten out new members pretty quick , not being mean , they just don’t wanna get shot.

'Nice thing about trap is that at many clubs you don't have to be a member to shoot.
You'll pay more for each round, but you don't necessarily have to "join" the club.
Of course if you plan on visiting the same club regularly... You really should apply to become a member.
The other nice thing is... Pretty much all clubs are open and friendly to new shooters.
Bring your shotgun and a few boxes of #7.5 target loads
Show up, introduce yourself and just tell 'em you're new and would like to try shooting.
Someone is going to volunteer to walk you through it... They'll stand right there with you making sure you're safe.

Got any examples? As far as I can tell, the two I looked into (Hamilton and Cookstown) require membership, unless I'm a guest of a current member.

It's been a few years, but I've shot at hamilton as a non member, but... policy changes I guess.p
Try Waterdown Rod&Gun or Guelph Rod&Gun.
I've shot sporting clays at Galt As a walk in, but it's been a while

Those are just hunting regs I think. My shotgun takes 6 or 7 rounds if I remember correctly (with an S&J kit) but one’s in the chamber.

In Canada a pump action a tube fed shotgun has no limit on magazine capacity.
For a semi automatic shotgun the legal magazine capacity is five rounds of whatever ammunition the firearm is chambered for.
The most common chamber lengths are three and three and a half inches...
So, going by SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute) specifications you can fit more than the prescribed five rounds into a tubular magazine because the SAAMI specs. are maximums... Commercially available ammunition is manufactured to slightly varying lengths, but few approach the absolute maximum spec.
For example... A 3" semi auto with a tube long enough to hold 5.99 of (SAAMI) 3" shells can still only hold 5, 3" (SAAMI) shells, but... Seven 23/4" shells will fit into that magazine
Depending on the design of the shotgun you could start off with nine rounds loaded...
7 in the mag
1 on the lifter
1 in the chamber
IPSC rules specify you can only start a stage with a maximum of 9 in the gun regardless of your mag capacity.
I imagine this guy's shotty can hold 13-14 rounds. He'll have to manage the length of that tube though while running through a stage
Big shocker. Public safety minister knows absolutely nothing about guns or licensing. Not even the most basic things. He does know enough to repeat the talking points that they are only targeting criminals and not legal gun owners. The indisputable fact that the overwhelming majority of the guns they banned have never been used in a crime means nothing to him. Just keep saying the talking points and ignore reality. Not surprised but I was hoping for better.

My son has his PAL and inheirited a couple of hunting rifles. Now we (him,his sister and myself) are keen to hole targets. Beyond finding an amicable farmer with space where can we go?
Do you have to be a member of a range? Can you pay as you go?

I was going to say crown land (carefully check the rules for the parcel you want to shoot in) but there isn't much near london. Personally, I think shooting rifles on crown land in southern ontario is ill-advised. Too many dumb people wandering around and even if you have a good backstop, you can't control people entering your "range" from the sides. Sure, you probably see them but by that point, there may be a very angry conversation and cops involved.
IIRC some ranges have a few public days but they are overrun as there is a lot of demand. Friend of a member is your best bet to get access.
Be careful with licensing. Rifles are loud and attract attention. Read the rules on borrowing/lending firearms to ensure a minor hiccup (eg. son with PAL is shooting and not closely monitoring dad without PAL who is also shooting) doesn't become a major issue.
If you have a friend with range membership they generally allow guests (ours does). There may be restrictions on the number per member though, ours is 2 and that may actually be an RCMP thing.
There are pay as you go ranges but the only one I know of is in Stittsville Book A Range - Stittsville Shooting Ranges

June 7th is national Range day... A day when many clubs open their doors to the public with organized events designed to introduce people to the shooting sports. Info should be available on all their websites.
When I was looking at ranges around me a few years ago no one had any space at all Galt still has zero space so I can just shoot in the backyard and they blame it on the range cuz it's right beside it
