Celebrity Encounters

Anyone have any celebrity encounters? Full discolure, I’m 60 and have had many growing up in Toronto just by coincidence and being in the right place at the right time. Mine are as follows, in chronological order.
1) Uncle Bobby - The day man landed on the moon my dad and I went to the beer store at Brimley and Eglinton to get a case of beer to watch the moon landing and Uncle Bobby was standing in the line right in front of us. I was 6 years old.
2) Jim Neighbors- When was about 7 years old I saw Jim Neighbors walking through the airport and immediately recognized him as “Gomer Pyle “ was one of my favourite shows when I was a kid
3) Bob Dylan- In about 1984-85i was upstairs at the El Macombo to see Paul James. It was a cold winter night and I was standing at the bar and a guy was standing next to me wearing a leather parka and dark RayBan sunglasses, a little weird but didn’t think much of of it other than his face looked a little familiar. People started to approach him and he was very polite and engaging. My buddy leaned over and said to me “ Holy sh!t, your standing next to Bob Dylan”. What threw me off was that he was a little taller than than I would have expected him to be.
4)Little Richard- I was pulling out of a gas station in Hollywood in 1987 and there was this big limo next to me at a red light with tinted windows, I knew it was someone famous and was trying look discreetly to see who it was, the window rolls down and Little Ritchard leans out and starts talking to me, one of the most memorable moments of my life.
5) Donny Osmond- I was doing a service call at The Elgin/ Wintergarden Theatre in the early Nineties and was about to enter the stage door entrance, my hands were full of tools and a roll of wire when I heard a voice say “ Let me get that for you”. He opened the door for me and when I turned around to thank him I realized it was Donny Osmond.
5) Frankie Avalon- Also in the early nineties,at the Elgin/ Wintergarden theatre, I was with my ex and her best friend who was a beautiful Korean brain surgeon, I had gotten tickets to see a Howie Mandell HBO show being filmed. We get to our seat and Frankie Avalon was sitting right in front of us . I remember telling my wife’s friend and she had no idea who he was. I always found that amusing that she was a brain surgeon and had no idea who he was.
6) William Shatner-Saw him walking through the Eaton Centre in the early nineties when he was directing a sci-fi show that was being filmed on Yonge St.
8) Rolling Stones - Got to work a Rolling Stones concert at The Rogers Centre in 2005 or somewhere around there. I was a huge Stones fan so it was a dream come true for me. Didn’t get to speak to any of them but got to do set up a lot of their equipment and see the sound check and concert while being very well paid to do so.
Anyone else have a celebrity encounter they’d like to share?

Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) - Battlestar Galactica tv show
Chris Boucher - Raptors
Brian Burke - after he went to Calgary
I have a picture of me with Team Canada back in the early 90's at a function at the Ambassadors residence (Canada) to Sweden - Lindros, Karyia, etc
Also a picture with Chretien (when he was PM)
Also a picture at the Rose Garden with Bill Clinton (when he was POTUS)

Think that's it...

Forgot one, Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) in the men's bathroom at a record release party.

Curtis Joseph at the Toronto Zoo with my Grade 10 biology glass. He refused to sign anything. I think he was there with his kids school as a parent with the class.

Pinball (Michael) Clemons. Met him and several other Arogs a few times at my high school as the Argos would come often. Also ran into him at a Best Buy in Oakville. He was shopping for a digital camera as a Christmas gift at the time. Really nice guy.

Brian Burke while he was the GM for the Leafs. At the practice facility. Him walking out of the washroom zipping up his zipper.

Lennox Lewis. Came into HMV at Square One while I was working.

Several other Canadian musicians/artists while working at HMV from 2001-2008. No huge names. David Usher was one of them, I believe.

My cousins sold some reclaimed golf balls to John Candy

I used to be in the proximity of Bob McCown semi frequently at a day job. The sunglasses never came off

I liked listening to him on the radio.
Same with Bill Waters.

Joe Bowen + Family were walking through Markville Mall opposite way from me side by each obliviously taking up the whole aisle so I put the shoulder into Joe as I was trying to squeeze past. I had a moto jacket on so I barely felt the impact. Glanced back as I was waking away and he was glaring at me so I smiled and said "Keep your head up when you're crossing the blue line" to him. He didn't seem impressed.

I was at Leaside Arena to see my friends kid play hockey and noticed a really good looking blonde at the snack bar so it was obviously time for a hot chocolate. As I approached, Doug Gilmour appeared and the blonde disappeared. He is a pretty good guy. Chatted for a bit. Turned out the blonde was his wife at the time.

My neighbour was the keyboardist (?) for Gordon Ligthfoot, so I guess that's the most famous one for me. Said that while it's sad Gordon passed away, the band now is busier than ever playing tribute concerts for him.

Outside of that, met David Suzuki at the airport once by chance.

My sis on the other hand went to a party in NYC and hung out with Alice Cooper for a few hours. She said he was an amazing conversationalist and she really enjoy the time. Cousin is an indie movie editor so he had the invite the party.

Paid my way through school working concerts. Lots there. While I cared very little about "celebrity", it was interesting the range at attitudes the artists had and attitude didn't necessarily correlate with how rich or famous they were. Some were lovely, some were gross.

I was in a club downtown in the late 80's and as three guys walked past us, one of my friends said "Hey, it's Platinum Blonde!". I guess the dark lighting didn't make their hair look very light, so I pointed out some other guy across the room with long silver hair saying "That guy looks more like he belongs in Platinum Blonde", to which my other friend said "That's Rod Stewart!"

Tom Cochrane and Randy Bachman lived in my neighbourhood for a while , so did Bruce Cockburn briefly . Ron Maclean belonged to my boatclub , and also Rob Ball . Our cottage had The Captain & Tenielle for nieghbours for a while and Denzel Washington . Tenille called my wife her Canadain girlfriend , super nice people.

Musicians I've met - Peter Hammill, Vince Welnick, Howard Devoto. Actors - Randy Quaid, Richard Boone. Arcane fact: he's deathly afraid of elevators.

I went to school and lived in the same dorm as Brendan Fraser. He was a grade higher and we were more like friendly neighbors than friends. It was kind of cool seeing him at one of the reunions as a "normal" guy instead of some movie star.

I was presented an award by Nathan Phillips while in high school.

Late in life while on a service call I met Ed Mirvish and we ended up discussing electronic fault location. Nice guy.

A cousin's niece had a few hits in the early days of rock and roll. Decades later we ended up in the same neighbourhood and had coffee at her place.

Got a lift one winter day from the wife of the Governor General.

Generally speaking I like golden retrievers best.
