I think you are on the right track. I have never seen this, but if that is your problem then the RTV will solve it. If it doesn't solve it than have to explore other avenues. Hard to say exactly what I am looking at when the bike isn't in front of me.

Maybe not. If that was the cace then wouldn't the sprocket be covered in oil and the chain be spitting oil out all over the place.

+1 ya the shell is not what you have to worry about, it's the foam inside. It absorbs some of the inertia of what ever is in it. If there is nothing in it than it would have to be dropped from a substantial hight to damage it.

The cat works as soon as the car is in 'closed loop' regardless of drive conditions. You just burn more gas in stop and go. The cat is still doing it's job unless your vehicle isn't tuned properly. The more gas you burn, the bigger the carbon footprint.
