Did a little road trip with the wife today to Peterborough to go to the Canadian Canoe Museum. On the way we came across this historic plaque just north of Keene. Every time I have a bad day now, I’m going to read this and say to myself there’s always somebody that’s had a worse one, like Jim and George. As far as the Canoe Museum goes it was quite good and the best part … no tipping ( pun intended).

I've always heard of the canoe museum but had no idea until I rode by it a couple weeks ago for the first time what an attraction it is. That's a darn nice building.

People used to buy dynamite at the hardware for “environmental purposes”, not that long ago. Neighbour of mine used to blow up beaver dams with it.

I remember in the late 70’s or early 80’s there was some kind terrorist bombing in Toronto at Litton Industries or something like that, my memory is a little fuzzy. Anyway, CTV news did a segment on how easy it was to get dynamite in Toronto. They sent one of their reporters to a police station ( the one at Birchmount and Eglinton I think as it’s the closest one to CTV). The reporter goes in , fills out a form saying he needs dynamite to blow up a beaver dam at his farm and within 20 minutes he walks out with a certificate that he take to CIL and walks out with a case of dynamite the same day. That’s the same CIL that makes paint. Those were the days.

The new building is fabulous, they managed to get a lot of corporate donations that allowed them to build it. The Canadian Automotive Museum that I volunteer at is not so fabulous, it’s a good museum but they struggle to maintain their 105 year old building on a shoestring budget, also ongoing problems with the homeless. Still worth the $16 admission if you’re in Oshawa. A curator’s job is 90% paperwork applying for government grants and 10% dealing with displays and exhibits. The City of Oshawa, GM and Unifor give them hardly anything but grief.
