Soccer/football thread 2022

Jeez 2 goals in 2 minutes !!!! Goes from yawn inducing win to heart breaking tie for Senegal.
30 more minutes coming up.
Feel bad for Senegal - 85 minutes of elation then it all falls apart for them.

I was Bosnian for 90 minutes last night but unfortunately that didn’t help. I was really hoping the US team would get trounced but sadly that’s not the case, I’ll have to wait until I’m Belgian for 90 minutes on Monday. I have zero clue what Bosnia were up to yesterday but they didn’t seem to come with a plan.

England did the job but were unconvincing. They were a sloppy mess for the first 20 minutes or so of the game but fair play to the Congolese goalie who was on fire. That guy must be worth bajillions on the transfer market now.

I don't like Kane, but I respect him massively. Weirdly underrated, a bit like Salah, because he never got on the global celebrity carousel like Vini, Mbappe and Yamal. Watching him with Bayern, he's developed so many dimensions to his game beyond poaching goals. Him and Olise should be front runners for the Balon d'Or, depending on whose side does better, but it'll probably end up going to Mbappe for banging in so many goals in the tournament, especially if France win it all.

US is very lucky to draw a mediocre Belgium, but the difficulty will ramp up significantly with Spain and Portugal as potential opponents should they make the quarters.

Speaking of which, I saw the Portuguese team bus rip by on the Gardiner yesterday, which had been closed entirely for their benefit while us peons waited at a blocked on-ramp. Figured it out too late to give Cristiano Ronaldo the finger. If they didn't keep honouring Jota, that side would be impossible to cheer for...

I used to accuse Kane of being a donkey. You’re right, I was wrong, he’s actually good. The problem the England team have is that he’s actually the entire team at the moment. If something happens to him they will be lost.

Belgium have Lukaku and deBruyner. Are they old? Yes. Do they have magic boots? Also yes. Is there any US player that comes even close to either of them? No. We will see how things go. Speed vs experience will be the name of that game.

Spain formidable against Austria - are they the favourite now?
good game jamal is amazing - a treat to watch ⚽

More to come if I can stay awake.
