Soccer/football thread 2022

Cape Verde, a microscopic country of 300,000 that most couldn't find on a map to save their lives, has drawn with Uruguay after drawing with Spain in their first game. That's two World Cup winners. If they can draw or somehow beat Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay loses to Spain, they would finish second in their group and move on to the knockouts...

That was a brilliant game to watch. One of the best so far for the drama and enthusiasm of the team and supporters. At half time the BBC showed a clip of an interview in Cape Verde just at the moment they scored their first goal and it was a beautiful thing to see. “The crowd went wild” doesn’t quite capture it.

Now I need to get back to hunting for a Cape Verde football jersey.

No matter how hard they try to monetise the life out of the game, FIFA can't ruin moments of magic like that.

Good luck! Their keeper has gone from around 50,000 followers on Instagram to over 15,000,000, more than Neuer.

I love it when sports stories work out that way. Heavy on strategy and disciplined tactics.

Reminds me of a hockey game I coached years ago. We hammered a team from Buffalo in the first game 8-0. We met them later in the championship game, basically they were playing for a draw by using all their players to jam up the goal area. We drew at 0-0 despite holding the puck 99% of the game.

Then lost in a shootout. I was at the same time humiliated and impressed.

And in this case add a little luck and a LOT of lung-busting running. The impressive thing about this Cabo Verde performance was that they actually went down and still found a way to come back and tie it.

Greece winning Euro 2004 gives hope to all the minnows fighting for their lives against bigger fish.

Cape Verde official jerseys were $200+ CDN and they are all sold out.

Egypt poured on some Salah style last night. One thing I like about the World Cup is that there are plenty of teams out there where the players are genuinely happy to play as a team member with national pride. The smiles on the Egyptian players faces during the game were great.

Your best bet is probably the Chinese counterfeit sites like DHGate. I refuse to pay the hundreds that Liverpool charges for their jerseys, got one from them last year. It's surprisingly decent, and cost something like $40 after all shipping and tax etc. Of course, it's from last year, so I won't be wearing it again. Not a season I want to be reminded of.

Yet another Liverpool player who looked lost last season and looks like a world-beater in the World Cup. Gakpo, van Dijk, Isak and Salah have all had MOTM awards so far. Wasn't all Slot, though. Alisson has admitted taking games off to make sure he was fit for the WC, and I suspect a lot of the others were coasting to avoid injury, considering how limp they were over the last month or two.

Any one you would recommend? I used to use MineJerseys but the quality was so-so.

Senegal Norway was fantastic last night. I really hope Senegal sneak through to the next round as they were fantastic to watch. One of the few teams where the passing and skill is so top level that the transitions across the width of the pitch with one long accurate pass are very regular causing issues for opposing defences. Then everywhere else they are very physical and hard to move off the ball. Great to watch. Haaland for Norway is simply lethal. He’s just a goal scoring machine.

Had a look, can't remember who I bought through. They all change names regularly to dodge the copyright police anyway. I do remember that using the app yielded much better choices, I'm assuming for similar reasons where the lawyers tend to troll the website rather than the app.

There is (of course) a subreddit dedicated to fake jerseys from DHGate, maybe you could ask there:

The biggest problem I see is that by the time you get anything from there, the World Cup will be over...

It’s all good. Some Google foo found a few leads. I added to my collection of jerseys from SVP Sports actually. Managed to get an official Venezuela jersey and a Greece one for 40ish bucks a piece. They have some good deals.
