Window shopping again

A fella had a new tracer 9 at Niagara’s DGR in blue and she was a beauty. It had the utility box panniers and guard rails, skid plate etc with street tires on spoked wheels. It looked every bit of ADV style and ergos. High seat height and ground clearance. Had a Corbin seat as well come to think of it.

Attracted lots of interest from the group including myself. Other than what is reported from YouTube creators, really don’t know much about them.

There seems to be a trend of sport touring riders that prefer the ergos and look of ADV machines to keep on pavement. Yamaha’s website has the bike in their touring models. Don’t see the option of spoked wheels for 2026 so the model I saw is likely previous year or two. Other than dirt and fashion preferences, I’d say the stock mags suit it well.

What is better than having a motorcycle with a triple? Having two motorcycles that are triples! 😁

In the market for a new bike, if the numbers work out, it will be one of these:

transalp
africa twin (base model)
Tracer 9

I Have a strong preference for hondas, but on paper the tracer 9 would be a really good fit as well, my only concern is reliability, the yamaha is japanese but its also full of huge amounts of electronic gizmos and toys and this is a bit concerning for long term ownership. Input from current/previous tracer owners is very welcome.

Im trying to be more financially responsible which is why im keeping certain other bikes off the list.
I know a few Strommers who went from the 650 or 1000 to the triple of the Tracer9 and said the Yammie was an infinitely more fun bike to ride than either of those Stroms. If not going off road - the Yammie would be my choice from your list, or the base model 1050 Strom.

I've personally found that it's easy to improve passenger comfort with aftermarket accessories, since they can be made perfectly comfortable with good wind protection, a good aftermarket seat and some sort of backrest or top box. Unless spending more bucks on a real 2up sport touring or ADVtouring machine the aftermarket stuff might help bridge the gap. My wife says that my current bike is the most comfortable bike she's been on as a passenger, and it's all because of the seat choice and wind protection compared to my previous bikes.

You can take my 1050 for a ride if you want.

All the bikes I want are not available...either they're out of stock, the dealers dont have them because they're allotted a certain amount and they were sold long ago, or there is no 2026 model because honda might be planning to update it and bring a 2027

Wanted to run something by the GTAM people for a possible 2nd bike

I want something that doesnt overlap too much with the street triple as its my primary street bike, the idea of a KLR has crossed my mind, its different enough from the triumph that it can serve a different purpose entirely, I can use it to start venturing off road as a beginner, commute on it, but the most important priority: It looks like it can carry a passenger in relative comfort, the seat looks big and comfy enough, leg room looks decent, I understand that its softly sprung and underpowered, but I aint in a rush nor trying to set any speed records or lap times, just occasionally carry a passenger for 30-40 mins at a time, at a max speed of maybe 100 km/h.

Good idea or terrible idea for a 2nd bike?

Yes it can do all those things but "relative comfort" will vary depending on your definition. It's a wider dirtbike seat afterall.

I’ve seen the newest one and the seat appears to look comfortable but it of course depends on the passenger.

Yes the KLR650 will do what you're asking for with ease. Where it will under perform is going longer distances 2up or at faster speeds. But riding 2up for under an hour at max 100km/hr and it should be a pretty smooth and comfy ride.

My wife and I would take mine on return trips from Toronto to Penetanguishene aa few times a year nd it was fine on the county backroads like Hwy 27, but not fun on Hwy 400 due to excessive wind buffeting/turbulence for her and difficulty for me when passing other vehicles. We were under a combined 300lbs.

The Sargent seat for the KLR is a pricey bit of magic. I was fine for hours on it...slow hours.
A little top case with a back pad and should be okay two up. Many have gone RTW on the KLR.

Hmm seems @ToSlow or @timtune should be able to answer these questions, both have KLR's

If passenger comfort is your main priority seems like a different bike might be better option.

Were you not curious about a Moto Guzi for a while?

I think they are fine for hauling a passenger, however I can't have the Squeeze on for more than about 30 minutes before my hips issues have me needing the whole seat.

FWIW I decided the Squeeze and I should do some moto touring and with ONLY her comfort in mind I bought an 86 Wing. We toured for weeks at a time. Some of my best motorcycling times were 2up on that bike. I'd still have it if not for my hips.

Venturing off road…maybe the occasional jaunt with a pillion? I’d look at a scrambler of some sort. Different bike, torquey engine, wider bars and riding dynamic. Can manage a pillion for apps at happy hour.

There are a few machines that dress casual and do alright with adv style tires shoed on. 😉
