E bikes rampaging Toronto streets

I find it odd that these things are so unregulated. In a country where all levels of government apply regulations to so many things, many of which have such insignificant impact I can't believe that no level of government hasn't grabbed the reins.

I thought the news of injured kids on scooters this summer would prompt some reaction by government but nothing happened.

Generally speaking, in medicine you can't do anything unless it is specifically allowed. In most other things you can do just about anything unless it is specifically banned.

Regulations are worthless unless enforced - hence the problem.

The cranks are there. If the pedals are not attached to the cranks, it is not an ebike. No point zip tying them to the frame as there is no possible way to pedal that bike anyway. Stupid Wynnebag.

On one hand it amazes me that with the bloated bureaucracies at the federal and provincial levels, no Ministry of Transport has stepped in to enforce existing regulations or bans with these products. You'd think at least one of the 13 Ministers of Transport in this country would look at it and see an opportunity for a profile-building press conference.

Then on the other hand I realize that bloated bureaucracies don't exist to serve the public or a purpose, only to be a self-reproducing siloed ecosystem for more bloat and useless/unenforceable/unenforced regulations.

It is not illegal until you use it on a public road. Perfectly legal to run around your backyard on.
