Air Canada

How do they determine who to bump? How close to departure did you check in (were you the last)?
I'm told if you're the cheapskate who bought an economy ticket and didn't pay for extras you're the guy they bump.
I checked in 24hrs ahead, but that doesn't matter I think.
I'm not a fan of AC. 'Seems every time I go with them there's an issue.
Out of maybe ten trips maybe one went without a problem.
I've had everything from delayed baggage, completely lost never to be found luggage, over sold cancelations and delayed flights.
I know often a delay isn't the direct fault of the carrier, but... I'll blame them anyway 😀

39.000 thousand flew with AC yesterday just at Pearson alone

I guess my uneventful flights were the exception, and I shouldn't push my luck in the future. Then again, I only purchased a month before flying so the price wasn't super-discounted. I also purchased checked luggage. How much time before departure did you physically arrive, and do you think that would have factored into it?

For this trip, which was early on a Monday morning I arrived well in advance of the recommended time. For my circumstance they advise showing up 30 minutes prior to the regular recommended time. I doubled that.
I had firearms and ammunition with me, so... they need time to do a little extra at check in.

Who knows how they pick who gets cut first, but the fact that they're allowed to sell seats that don't exist is borderline sketch.

A lot of flights out of Pearson are connecting, who knows the reasons.

Maybe connecting was late on arrival

Yeah... No big deal.
I imagine it's an incredibly complex business to run. So many moving parts.
It's a logistical miracle anyone lands where they're supposed to.

Airlines have overbooked flights forever. I'm sure they have a formula they apply to determine the number of extra seats they can sell and the odds of having to bump someone.

I've never been bumped. I suspect that if you've checked a bag you're less likely to be bumped as they have to find your bag and remove it. Huge hassle I think.

I'm a bit cynical. I'm pretty sure if you're in a basic cheap seat, didn't pay a fee to select it, didn't check a bag you're far more likely to get the boot than someone who paid for one of the enhanced fair options AC has.

Lately I’ve been pretty lucky with flying premium

Never bumped, but been asked 3x if i would mind moving my seat to the emergency exit row. More leg room? Deal!

Lol...
So my flight back to YYZ was less than half full.
Both emergency exit rows near were vacant.
'Guy asked a crew member if he could move...
"Sorry sir, those care premium seats. You have to pay more to sit there"

So gotta wonder, is money the priority over having someone able/willing to open that door in an emergency..?

My gues... it's money

Can't recall if it was Air Canada but I'm sure in 2017 I swapped to those seats mid flight to Thailand. No issue. Maybe Cathay Pacific?

I had dinner with a long term AC employee yesterday, he’s not flight crew , but 30 yrs in airline he knows some stuff . They have a formula for how many no shows they expect on certain routes so they over sell . Not supposed to but they do . If somebody at AC ( executive, or the guy that has to sign off on an engine replace in a foreign country or landing gear stuff ) he is getting on that plane , somebody gets bumped . There are pretty stiff rules around bumping and they will always offer credits to get people to switch flights . Connected flights are a whole other thing , airline A has snow in Edmonton even though TO is sunny , so they loose an hour deicing . Checked bag is like insurance , plane can’t fly with your bag and not you ( bomb thing) . Couple hundred thousand a day going somewhere around the world with AC , not everything is going to be smooth.

How do they determine who to bump? How close to departure did you check in (were you the last)?

Usually they'll start by making announcements asking people who are interested in taking a later flight to volunteer.

Then they make the same announcement and start offering money.

If still no takers, the amount of money being offered goes up.

Rinse, repeat, until a taker.

If no taker once whatever maximum dollar amount they can offer has been reached, some poor soul gets manually selected and told they're off the flight.

Some airlines have an electronic "bidding' process for this through their app now. On our of our past cruises we got an offer for a bump and it popped up in our app - we put a bid in for how much we wanted in order to be reassigned to a later flight, given we had the time flexibility to do so, but I guess someone under-bid us as we didn't get chosen.

My sister got something like $750 once for taking this option for a flight the next day - she's retired and has all the time in the world. She took the cash, left the airport and went and did some touristy stuff, got a nice fancy hotel room for the night, ate well, and got back to the airport the next day for the rescheduled flight and still had a few hundie in her pocket.

I took $500 once for a later time flight going to Atlanta , was going a day early for a convention so had hours to kill and sitting in the Priority lounge for 5 hrs with free beer and good internet was just fine .

I will say something positive about AC...
They, as well as some others including Westjet do not charge baggage, oversize/overweight fees to veterans or active service members of the CAF.
They also waive certain surcharges for certain types of checked luggage.

This most recent trip I would normally have had to pay probably $150-$200 each way for the baggage I was hauling.

Show your VSC or other military ID and "poof!" your fees are waived.

For the flight i almost was booted from they offered an $800 travel voucher and a seat on a flight leaving 3 ours later...
So, not cash money. But rather a coupon you could use to book another trip.
Fair deal if you fly often enough I guess.

Got $2k a couple decades ago from Air Canada for a flight from Vancouver to Paris. They were offering a percentage of your ticket in cash and a flight 6 hrs later. My ticket was a star alliance round the world trip and the lady at the desk had a shocked look as she saw how much my refund was 😆

I remember the days when people would dress in suits to fly, it was like a function of some sort.
