Suzuki s40

So I’m going to check out a 08 s40, Iam aware of the cam chain tensioner issues they have, previous owners says he never done anything with it nor did he know about it much. His gf drove the bike for two summers and she don’t like riding so they’re selling it - she put 2000km on it

it has 32,000k and he’s wanting 2900 certified, figure if I get it for 2400 that not to bad for a certified bike. Are there any other main issues I should be aware of when looking at it ?? The bike is all completely stock

I’ve rode bike since I was ten years old and have rode street bikes since my mid twenties, and I’m 40 atm, but I haven’t rode or had a bike for about 7-8 years maybe now, and bikes I had before were sports bikes aka crotch rockets - my body can’t handle riding them anymore so I figured something like the s40 would be good, nice and light and something that I can have my gf on the back with since she’s now on the kick to come riding with me lol she’s never been on a bike before tho

2008?

Unless it was mint - I'd be pushing for something closer to 2000 lol.
Its an air cooled single cylinder 650cc engine. Dont know if it is ideal for carrying 2 people.

You sure you wont get bored of the lack of power when riding around in that thing?

If you're not aware, they vibrate badly.
If you're looking at 650's, my advise is to buy a twin.
And they are definitely not comfortable 2 up.
Just my opinionated opinion.

Well one of the last bikes I had was a ktm 625smc it was a “thumper” as well, I just want a bike that has a pile of power as I get a little wild at the very least let’s say lol
I also do like the looks of the bobber style bike as well, and thought I could maybe swap/build to a bobber. But if my gf likes riding on the back I don’t think I could do that 🙄. I do like the fact that it isn’t a big heavy bike either as I’m not a “big man” per say

She wouldn’t be on the bike too often tho, likely once in awhile, likely be ridden just myself most of the time and odd time with her. Plus I like in the country not the city so would be country roads for riding

The bike does look to be in VERY GOOD shape, was very well taken care of IMO, could be sitting in show room i think, VERY clean. I was gonna see about offering 2400 for the bike if I liked it when I look at it tomorrow

Is that the one that needs the gas tank removed to change the spark plug?

There is something about the power delivery of a thumper that you just can't get from a multi. I find it intoxicating.

Just give the bike a very careful examination. Checking for anything broken, cracked, corroded or badly faded. That usually gives you an idea of how it was treated.

Minor surface rust starting in lot of harder to get to spots usually means improper storage and care.

Well, from what they were telling me, it was always covered up and stored inside of a heated garage and by the looks of the pictures the bike looks like it’s extremely clean like very, very nice looking in good shape

A good friend of mine is selling his Vulcan. Lightly used and always garage stored. He's a very good human, as in shortly after meeting him I would trust him with the keys to my house good human.

Seems to fit your needs and he is motivated to sell but I can't speak to how deep that motivation runs. I absolutely know he would not misinform to sell the machine.

Great for 2 up riding and as a bonus it's already kitted for it. It's also a twin with less than 10k on it.

It’s a little higher than what my budget is allowing right now and it be a 900 is a little bit more bike than what I’m after. Like I said when I had sports bikes and stuff with larger motors in them, I get myself into trouble real fast so I don’t need anything that’s got a ton of power that I can speed with.

You control speed with throttle. With any cruiser without a windscreen, going into extra quick mode isn't that much fun and you will find yourself pacing at a speed that is comfortable.

I understand budget...IMHO, that Vulcan is much more bike for the difference and I don't mean power related. I have been down your road before and regretted compromising for a the difference of getting the bike that checked all the boxes. Ended up costing me much more in the end. But as the saying goes, I don't use your shlong to **** so I'm not going to tell you how to use it.

I've reached out to ask him what his rock bottom is. I will DM you with an answer.

To add to J767's point:

At the ripe age of 40, you have to ask yourself 'how many summers you have left'.

While that S40 does look nice, based on what you were intending to use it for, the Vulcan would better suit your needs.

Anywho, do what you think is best as long as you have:

I'm 38 now and every big decision I make circles around getting older as I find that each year passes by quicker than the previous one.

Have you ridden a cruiser I would say a 900 is slower than a 300 sport bike an 650 is like a old 250.

You are won't even feel it "pull".

It's outta grunt at 3000 and dying after 5000. Don't worry about it because thoughtful engineers omitted a tach. 🤓

Take it for a test ride if you can. You will be bored of it in the driveway.

I do also like how they can be turned into the bobber style bike, and that they’re light. Other cruiser I’ve seen are 5-600lbs lol

Plus when I checked insurance the s40 is only like 66$ a month lol, insurance cost is also something I have to think about being I have a newer car that’s 400-450/month payment plus 150-160 for insurance.

I don’t live with my gf either so it would be seldom that she’d be on the back of the bike. I see her once or twice a week as me working in healthcare I don’t get a lot of free time

I think the S40 is elegant in its simplicity - there's not a whole lot that can go wrong with it. And they're nice looking.

It's not going to have a "pile of power" though, absolute best case scenario is 34hp. Now, I do believe that can be enough power, but if you go in with expectations of it being quick you are going to be very disappointed

Have you looked at/considered a Vulcan S? Same displacement so insurance should be similar, but nearly twice the power
