Dundas Street

on one hand I understand the ridiculousness, because I bet you I can get hundreds to sign a petition to legalize crack too

on the other hand, its just a street sign, so I dont really care either way?

lol do people really have nothing better to do then get offended all day long.
No they do not. I say this as a privileged white male from a high horse.

we are judging people / races today by the sins of a generation past. I work with a lot of Germans....as a Polak should I hate them all because they ran us down a generation ago? No. They did nothing to me.

But I do have lots of cousins who hate all Russians, Germans and Ukrainians for doing us wrong so many years ago.

Statute of limitations has to kick in someplace
Sir John A, wronged the aboriginals 150 yrs ago?
Lord Kitchener , city of Berlin renamed Kitchener for him, bad man with non whites 120yrs ago
Thomas Jefferson, owned slaves 300ys ago

Lets knock down Inca temples and build our Catholic churches on the foundations.......... lets erase history. It makes no sense .

I knew a couple of German ex-WWII military and both were decent guys. In other times my uncles, decent guys too, would have shot them.

The difference is that we can accept Germans but hate Hitler and his murderous psychopath cronies. The rank and file were just doing their military duty.

I never knew who Dundas was until this came up. If the protesters had kept quiet Dundas would just be another name. I don't respect or honour Dundas Street.

Since the name was given by J G Simcoe, it must be assumed he respected Dundas and too should have his name eliminated. Lake Simcoe, Simcoe Street, Simcoe Ontario, Simcoe County etc.

Wouldn't the money being spent on this be better spent educating about the uglier side of Canadian history? Slavery in Canada, the segregated schools that existed in Canada until 1983 and the psychological degradation of any race.

This should be the focus IMHO...not trying to erase a past (whether we like it or not).

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm sure if I lived in those times I'd probably be a racist mofo also. Different times, mentalities, and I'm sure a lot of what we do today is going to be frowned upon and scrutinized in the future by generations ahead.

It's one thing to change a name with historical significance but no current significance and quite another to change something like this in active use. The costs associated with updating all dundas addresses is astronomical. You have street signs, canada post, all business stationary, all ttc maps etc. There are much more constructive things to spend tens of millions of dollars on. Toss up a few historical plaques explaining the context and opposition so we educate instead of suppressing history. If anyone is triggered by "dundas", they have much bigger problems than the name of the street.

another example of Canadians aping Americans
our history isn't shiny perfect
but it's a lot cleaner than that mess to the south
not much here to get that excited about

Bang on. We need an applause symbol in the "Like" option.

BTW Kitchener Ontario was named Berlin until WWII and changed for obvious reasons.

Berlin Ohio (Lovely riding area) changed their name from Berlin to Berlin. It used to be pronounced BerLIN, accent on the second syllable. It is now pronounced BERlin, accent on the first syllable. Saved a bundle. Some cagey Amish farmer probably figured that out.

Is there a write in option? I want to vote for Tapioca Blvd.

Egad! Name a street after a poisonous related plant? That's condoning murder.

But cassava is safe for human consumption after it's processed to remove the cyanide. ... If you've ever had tapioca, you've definitely had cassava root.” Too much tapioca won't kill you because it's been processed. But even a little uncooked cassava root can be lethal.

The stupidity is that we're going to spend $250k to "consult on" renaming Dundas St. Money that I'm sure, given we're in a pandemic with low tax revenues, is well spent.

Those darn *checks notes* street signs enslaving people. Talk about first world problems.

Too much. I think not.
I was told recently by a good friend, that the older generation will not change what happened in history because it is just that.
BLM etc.
Whereas the younger generation do not in anyway think the same as my/our generation.

Sorry. This was the first thing I thought off when I read this

At the time he said that very American quote during a speech in the Virginia Legislature he was a plantation owner with 60+ slaves. Just a tad ironic.
