A Ride up North - James Bay

I started out for the JBR last Monday hoping a grim weather forecast might be just good enough to make the trip. After riding 4 hours in pelting rain, I stopped in Mattawa for a late lunch. During the day the 5 day weather forecast went from grim to grimmer so I pulled the plug, it didn't make sense to ride 5 days in the rain. That makes 2 aborted attempts this year -- my may trip was snowed out, and this one rained out.
The universe is trying to tell you something. Hopefully it is a good something.

The black flies are ferocious once it gets warm up there. Mind you, I did it in July

The universe is telling you to ride in mid June :D
I know. I chose early and late dates to minimize bugs. Probably best to plan for August next year.

I went to Ouje Boujoumou this August. Bugs weren't bad. Not as far north as Long Point but similar conditions

I'm going to wait until they finish construction to do this route. Don't want to ruin the farkles on my bike.

You might be waiting a few years, I pretty sure they said it was a 5 year re-construction starting last year.

If you can ride gravel, I bypassed a lot of construction by using the north road. I don't know where construction is currently though.

I'm still thinking about the JBR for August this year but a lot will hinge on how the ride to Pickle Lake goes starting this Friday. I need to know if I've got the comfort thing dialed in or not as I'd be wanting to ride super long days in order to do the trip in 3-4 nights versus blowing an entire weeks vacation for it.

Chances of getting to and from that neck of the woods without hitting some rain is very slim, although current forecasts are looking quite positive with the exception of Friday evening. We may even thread the needle there with the bulk of the precipitation arriving overnight.

BTW check your PM’s @MacDoc. ?

Looking better - will be very interested in your road condition report. I tend to be impulsive on these things so let me know leave time in case I decide to make a dash north. Did you decide on any accommodation?

Same here. Went there via the Route de Nord on the last trip up. Not sure if we missed and construction - we all on KLRs and this was just an excuse to Travel Gravel.

For anyone considering James Bay, take note....if my recent trip to Pickle Lake is any indication ALL indian land is highly restricted right now. I would expect that Chisasibi at the top fo the JBR is no different.

What does this mean? Well, for me, the whole allure of riding up there (adventure and endurance aside) is to ride to James Bay, splash some water on the bike (of for the more adventurous, get your tires wet) and be able to officially say you've rode to Nunavut. But without access through Chisasibi, the road to the bay is going to be inaccessible. So, you'd go all that way and not be able to accomplish that goal.

Accordingly I've officially pushed off doing the JBR to at least next year.
