Post up your liquor/spirit talk ?

@Hardwrkr13 .. this may interest you. Talk about timely, lol. Gotta be pricey (as rare scotch usually is).

Really excellent @Zoodles95. Very nice tequila collection. I've heard good things about Tierra Noble and was heavy eyeballing it on my MX trip earlier this year.... specifically the extra anejo bottle. Instead I ended up going with the Clase Azul Reposado (posted earlier) and a few other bottles. Here's one (and I've been meaning to share it). It's another tequila I've doubled up on.

Don Julio 1942. Here's both bottles. Interestingly, only one has the gov't liquor export stamp. Large image with lots of detail.

Here's the info card out of the older bottling.

I wish I could read Spanish better...

1942 has been available at a few places in Canada for $160-$200.

I've learned not to trust anything from Mcallan that doesn't have an age statement on it. I've tried and/or currently own the rest on their list though and the Dalmore and Bowmore on there I've mentioned here earlier.
The Glendronach on there, as well as their 12 and 18 are also supurb and some of my favs (I currently just have their 18).

I realized I'm not really enjoying Tanqueray anymore. Bottle will look good in my bar and still be a good option for other drinks, just not in my G&T's.

I bought my first bottle of Stoli and I'm a big fan. On the rocks or mixed in a V&T it's good.

Im going to a Covid bar hop tonite. 6 bars setup in a backyard at a socially acceptable distance. each bar has its owners fav drinks.

Stoli's sister. My buddy's (Ukranian) father always kept a bottle in the freezer, and it became our go-to Vodka in the 70s. Unfortunately the LCBO won't stock it any more.

Gin collection just exploded. Woo Hoo!

LCBO store shipping is a great way to get stuff. Takes longer though than it does to get stuff shipped from out of province. Oh Well... Finally got a Plymouth Gin, The Hayman's Sloe Gin, and a bottle of Empress 1908. While I was there I snagged a bottle of Hendrick's and a Beefeater. I guess Beefeater, Tanqueray, and Plymouth are kind of the grandfathers of gin and drinking them and working with them will help develop my palate and knowledge. Hendrick's I guess is one of the "new" gins and I am looking forward to making a G&T with it. First one will be the cucumber version. Then I will try one with a slice of lime.

I have some other oddities coming from out of province. Want to snag a Hendrick's Orbium to see what the hub bub is about. I have also heard good things about Tanqeray 10 so I will snag one of those in the coming weeks.

Oh man... You are right Crankcall... Out and about today and snagged yet more gin...

Tons of good reviews and hub bub about both Botanist and 47 Monkeys. I also snagged a Brokers as well after watching some youtube Gin review videos. I also have been hearing about this Fever Tree Tonic and they had this brand at the Longos on Fairview in Burlington so I just had to snag them. I also have a nice Tequila cocktail that uses Ginger Ale so I thought I would upgrade my mix.

I also snagged some cucumbers to use with the Hendrick's gin and some lime to use in the typical London Dry Gin G&T.

The Mrs. was not big on the Taqueray or the G&T I made with it. So, different Gins and better tonic. LOVE the Beefeater. I did some Gin tasting last night and I was blown away by the citrus notes. Yeah... Tasting big time Saturday night.

Tonight is G&T time. Sterotypical London Dry with a lime slice versus Hendrick's with cucumber.

Verdict? My wife loved both...

The Hendrick's is not like any of the other Gins I have tried and perhaps that is why some Gin traditionalists can't wrap their head around it. I really enjoyed sipping it neat and in the G&T oh man... So refreshing. The one in the middle is a typical G&T made with Beefeater and a slice of lime. Both it and the Hendrick's version with the cucumber were wonderful just different.

I may hit the Botanist tonight and perhaps try the 47 Monkeys.

The Beefeater is just an incredible Gin; especially for the price. It is one of those products that are underappreciated. Like Olmeca Altos Reposado for Tequila or Stoli Vodka. Solid products and because they come in a sort of mundane bottle and are so inexpensive they get overlooked.

Next up? I really want to try Beefeater 24, Tanqueray 10, Hendrick's Orbium and of course it never really ends. Dang... Darn spirits rabbit holes!

Then you have to try all those gins with the other Fever-tree tonics (Elderflower with the green label and Aromatic with the pink label).

My wife wanted to try Dillon’s so she had a bottle of their Unfiltered Gin and a bottle of their Rose Gin delivered last week.

Btw, I kept the Botanist bottle to perhaps use for something else like a salad dressing.

Enjoy the gins

Cool. Thanks. I will try the other Fever Trees tonics. Still on the beginning part of the learning curve here.

Snagged some more Fever Tree today. Now I have 2 different Tonics, some of their Ginger Ale, and some Ginger Beer. Was picking up this nice package from the Post Office which is at our local Shoppers. So, Tequila Ocho Anejo and to my pleasant surprise Shoppers sells Fever Tree!

Fun fact! If you make a G&T in a low ball like glass like this and use 1.5 oz of Gin then a 200 ml smaller bottle of Fever Tree tonic is perfect for 2 of these G&Ts. Yummy! Tried a Hendrick's with cucumber and used lime for the Broker's and Empress 1908.

Easy to tell these apart! Cucumber obviously for the Hendrick's, the Violet hue is obviously the Empress 1908 version and clear the Broker's. They were all delicious and refreshing. The Empress has an interesting late palate or aftertaste and I am wondering if I am picking up the tea botanical they used. Was not sure about this gin after drinking it neat. In the cocktail it acquited itself well. The Broker's was wonderful as well. Very different from the G&T I made the previous evening using Beefeater which was much more citrus forward. The Hendrick's is the oddball but man is it ever wonderful with the cucumber. My wife just loves it. Hendrick's will always have a spot in my bar going forward as its flavor profile is so unique. Conversely I feel the same way about Beefeater. It is an amazing example of a typical London Dry Gin and no matter what these two Gins will be a staple going forward.

Present state of the Gin collection. The Sloe Gin is really more of a liquer but I have some cocktail plans for it.

Not going to try the 47 Monkeys yet. Need to develop my palate a bit more and the only way to do that is to keep tasting various gins. This certainly worked for me with tequila. My palate has come a long way (along with my knowledge) the past couple of years.

So... Some feedback please... I have been trying Gins neat but that works for some and not for some others. I have been watching a lot of Gin reviews on the No Nonsense Gin Reviews YouTube channel and he swears by using some tonic when he tastes gin. He does not use ice or a garnish. Just a reasonable amount of gin with the same Fever Tree tonic with each gin. I have though it would be an interesting experiment to try this. .I am just not sure of what proportions to use to taste Gin this way,

+1 for Fever Tree. Most decent bartenders are passionate about the mix, moreso than the booze. If 3/4 of your drink is mix, dont cheap out there.
Useless trivia, G&T was a tropical british favorite since the tonic water used quinine as a flavour which helped against malaria hence the name "fever tree" since quinine comes from tree bark.
A 'proper' G&T has no ice, since the ice cubes (water) were always sketchy in the locations they were enjoyed. I've learned to love 'ice less' drinks from traveling, some of our trips ice was just not possible to have so....

Not enough quinine in today’s G and Ts to help with malaria. Also it was put into drinks originally as quinine has a very bitter taste. Easier to get a Brit to taste something nasty if it has booze in it too. Quinine glows in the dark under UV light too. G&Ts are great for clubs.

I can’t drink gin neat. It’s way too flowery....I’d rather down a bottle of Calvin Klein eau de toilette. Mixed drinks and it’s all good though.

Looks and sounds great on those gin posts @Zoodles95. And thx for the feedback. I agree Beefeater Gin is very much under the radar with most people... hence my post sharing it in the Gin talk. We're on the same page with spirits again. I too have Hendrick's (as mentioned) and picked up some cucumber to try G&T cocktails with it of this weekend... and in a more dedicated taste evaluation. You have a very appealing bar with both those added. Enjoy. I've tried the Fever Tree tonic a number of times and it's okay; it didn't jump out much for me. I tend to use a favorite more mainstream tonic most of the time (i.e., much cheaper haha). Thx for all the pictures! Beefeater London dry is great value and not very expensive... it makes a $40 bottle of liquor (or spirit) look expensive

The Henrick's Gin is in the freezer...

I recently picked up a bottle of 1800 Reposado tequila (~ $40 at the LCBO) to use in Strawberry Fields cocktails. I found it very good and smooth on its own (sampling it separately neat). I was impressed. Not a cheap tequila... but not that expensive either. (Very large picture [2725X3608])

Wow... Ordered Sipsmith and Tanqueray Malacca via instore delivery and it came in 2 days! Wow... That is usually a 2 week process in my experience. I also snagged a Tanqueray 10 since I have been hearing so much about it.

Will see what I think. I have been watching a lot of reviews on the No Nonsense Gin Review channel.

Very entertaining guy.

This is his review of Tanqueray 10:

My only "gripe" with Tanqueray 10 is the price. Beefeater 24 costs $4 more than the standard Beefeater in Alberta. Tanqeray 10 costs $18 more than the standard Tanqueray. From talking to Bobby from the review channel the price differential in London, England is not nearly so broad as it is in Canada and the U.S. For what it costs to buy Tanqueray 10 here in Ontario (or Alberta) you can buy some pretty special small batch gins.

Nice! It's too bad that Olmeca Altos Reposado is not available in Ontario. It is one of the best buys in tequila bar none. Have you tried Tromba Reposado? C.E.O. Eric Brass in Canadian. The Master Distiller Marco Cedano is also a part owner and was the Master Distiller at Don Julio for a number of years. Very good tequila for the money and their Reposado is the star of the lineup.

Interesting factoid about 1800 Reposado. Some say it was the first "premium" tequila in the U.S. market; long before Patron was a thing. Apparently it was launched in 1975 in the U.S. market and before that most tequilas were the Mixtos (51% give or take of Blue Agave aqua miel). I have a bottle of 1800 Anejo in my tequila bar. Salud.

Cool info @Zoodles95. I share your enjoyment of tequila. I haven't tried Tromba yet but it was on my list (recommended by a local tequila expert) when I was in MX earlier this year. Word has gotten out for sure. Their association with the Don Julio brand is very good cred imo. Don Julio is some of my favorite tequila; I drink it often in MX.... but it's definitely expensive in Canada. The two best priced local liquor stores didn't carry Tromba in MX so I picked up another bottle. I have a number of bottles I want to share and I'll post one up from time to time as I get around to taking pictures.

I defer to your tequila experience and knowledge... and its fun to share bottle talk. My father kept a old cheap mixtos Jose Cuervo bottle back in the 80's (pretty rough imo). Thank god I didn't base my judgement of tequila on that. Small world with both of us having 1800 in the collection... cheers. I think 1800 is a very good tequila for the masses to try (much like the bourbon talk I posted earlier), it's much better than cheap bottles and still < $40 at the LCBO (blanco and reposado).

For even more savings I really enjoy El Jimador blanco for cocktails and picked up a reposado recently (for other cocktails). It's also an opportunity to sample these spirits straight (with a sipper). We'll see how the reposado compares to 1800 version.

Have a great weekend.

For an inexpensive Blanco try Olmeca Altos Blanco. El Espolon Blanco and Reposado are good as well; but unfortunately they use a column still in their process which you want to avoid with tequila if you can because it has a tendency to strip the agave flavors from the juice.

In a similar vein try to avoid tequilas made with diffusers if at all possible. The process tends to strip away a lot of the good flavors and then the distillers are allowed to "rectify" the tequila by adding well... additives into the tequila to get the flavor where they want it to be.

We have a decent Gin selection in Ontario but our Tequila selection is sorely lacking. In Alberta you can buy Olmeca Altos Reposado and El Tequileno Reposado which are simply incredible tequilas for that low $40 price point. In Ontario on a budget I would steer people towards El Espolon and then Tromba om a budget. For a Blanco I would recommend Olmeca Altos Blanco, then Tromba Blanco with El Espolon as another option. None of these are diffuser products. Oddly enough the column still used for El Espolon makes it a very "mild" brand of tequila and a good sipper.

If you can find them the best tequila in Ontario is Pasote. The Repo and Anejo are fantastic.

Other tequilas at the LCBO worth your time are Siempre Blanco, Aquamiel (a Blanco), and the Cenote Reposado and Anejo.

I recently snagged a bottle of Tierra Noble Anejo at an LCBO in Hamilton but ainhave yet to crack into it. Interestingly enough their distillery is at the highest elevation of any distillery that makes tequila; yet they use Valle Pinas. Supposed to be an interesting tequila. Their extra Anejo is supposed to be very good.

Wish we could get Roca Patron in Ontario. I have a Blanco and Anejo at present and both are excellent and blow away the standard Patron line. I will be picking up a Reposado along with some more gins in my next out of province order.

The uk has gone nuts over gin. It’s the new hipster drink. There are gin bars that only serve the stuff and nothing else. Nearly every bar has a gin list.

Side story....years ago I was in Cartagena Colombia and was looking forward to getting some Colombian rum but forgot until I got to the airport. No worries I thought, I’ll stop at the duty free. The duty free was a brand new store and only had shelves and shelves full of Gordon’s gin. One type of gin..one brand. It was cheap as chips though so we picked up two litres. Bizarre though.

Wow! That is a crazy story.

This is how you can enjoy Gordon's Gin.
