Service Ontario Service Interuption........

So I guess you also cannot go and write your M1 test.

Sucks for the ones that wanted to get their M1 as you cant get your M2 without it.

You can't just say. "Well, I was going to write my test but the Test Centre is Closed. I would have passed for sure"

Hopefully you have a few hours to spare waiting on hold.

Well I just got stickers in the mail for 3 of my 4 vehicles... almost wish I didn't pay proactively this year.

Also need to shop for Insurance since Allstate jacked my rates up for no reason 3rd year in a row.

Fingers crossed we're not in Lockdown and prevented from riding!!

Would you be given leniency for a sticker that expired well before they announced it? On a motorcycle perhaps, you could always plead that you were waiting for the season and hope for understanding. Cars probably not so much. There must be a limit on it.

I'm wondering about the guy who bought my bike He's picking it up from me this weekend, don't know if he will be able to plate it for a while.

If they are taking this virus thing seriously more police attention should be directed towards the bigger fish, virus related issues, not nit picky paperwork.

If I was selling a bike I would write up an agreement that the buyer signs stating he won't use the bike until it is transferred. Keep your plate. Him riding an unplated or misplated bike isn't your problem.

Both sign the dated bill of sale and get copies. Deal done.

~80% of SO in the province are closed. They are "essential" in that they are allowed to be open, but not essential enough that they must be open.

Between almost no business, the expectation that they hire/use an employee as a screener at the door (who wants that job for very little money?) and not wanting to expose themselves to a stream of idiots that think Covid is not worth changing anything in their life over, I don't blame them.

He messaged me earlier to let me know that he had transferred it today, so I'm guessing some SO offices are open. My plate was off before it was sold, and it was picked up with a trailer.

It is my understanding that you have to keep your plates.
The plates are yours and registered under your name.
You cannot sell a vehicle with the plates.

At least that's how the lady at SO explained it to me.

The plate stays with you.
Correct, plates stay with the person they were originally issued to. I was just verifying that I had removed it before handing over the bike.

That's why there's a perforation down the middle of the two sections of your ownership. They are separate documents. One part stays with the bike (which is now his). One part stays with the plate (which is always yours. they are not transferable).

Technically the plate is not yours. You're more of the conservator of it. The government can demand you surrender it to them at their discretion.

I forgot about this thread. I bought a truck on Monday in Hamilton and went to the local SO to change it into my name. They were only allowing four people in at a time and everyone else had to wait outside. Luckily there was only one other guy there when I got there, so it was a short wait. They kept the door locked and would allow one to enter and one to leave. Seemed like a very good compromise.

Some person, hopefully ill informed, said that if one does not buy a sticker for 2020, then when they buy their sticker for next year that Service Ontario will collect for this year. Anybody have info?

That doesnt work. Its either fake or government stupidity that will get cancelled. What if I didn't have the vehicle on the road in 2020? Especially in he forthcoming recession.

If your birthday was in November and you put your bike away and don't go and get your sticker till April, you still pay for the full year. The sticker you bought in April will still expire in November of 2020. Now I'm not sure if you don't go and get your sticker till 2021, I don't think you would have to pay for 2020.

I used the same plates that I used with previous bike. Last valid sticker was from 2007/2008.
I did not have to pay for the 12 years I didn’t ride.

As long as you wait for the full year to pass (birthday to birthday) than you would still have to pay for the months that passed from your bday to time of stick purchase.
Something like @Klaatu said.

Correct. If you buy a sticker the day before your birthday and didnt have one during the current year you have to pay the full year for one day of use. It has always been that way. Dumb but government.

so are they still processing sticker orders online?...my b-day is the end of April and I'd rather order them online now, then take advantage of the extension and then have to deal with total chaos when things return to normal...i don't see anything on their website saying that you can't continue to order validation stickers online, just that you don't have to...any thoughts?
