Please help with airline info, anyone!

Currently stranded in Mumbai, India with return ticket booked on UA0049 & UA4269 for April 15th.
The Travel Agent emails me that those flights have been cancelled and then goes silent.
(I had asked for any alternate flight).

Questions:
Has United really cancelled those flights? I could not find that info on their website or the 'net.
Or, is the agent scamming me in order to resell the same ticket at a higher price - is that something to take into account or am I being nasty and suspicious?

JT seems to have forgotten that there are Canadians in other parts of the world besides S.America & Europe. Is anyone aware of when his attention will shift to S.E. Asia? I had registered with the "GC.CA travel" site, but nary a peep out of them on any repatriation plans for this region.

* I had started my journey in Jan of this year, way before there was awareness of COVID-19 and have no intent to "freeload" a return journey on tax payer's money. At the same time, I am living off savings with no money coming in and have to be careful with expenses*

Any feedback from anyone in the airline industry or connections thereof on the status of UA0049 & UA4269 for April 15th and/or is UA compensating for cancelled flights or issuing a credit towards travel on another airline ... the information will be most welcome.
In advance, thank you!

Contact the consulate in the city you are in. You're probably going to need to do some hopping around the planet before you get a flight home.

India has very low numbers so far. See any reason for that from where you are?

What are they going to say, come on home there is more of it here then there?

Here’s what I’ve read so far from a travel forum I’m on. Take it with a grain of salt, I’m not an industry insider.

1. online flight lists/booking tools are not useful anymore. They are inaccurate as things change every day

2. trying to get through via telephone is difficult as the airlines are overwhelmed with requests

3. you might be better off at the airport talking with actual people but check with the consulate for advice

Bad news....breaking news as of a few mins ago is that India just went into full lockdown. Call the consulate right now or go there. No one here can give you more advice than them.

I don't have inside information. Based on everything I have seen, I don't expect many flights in April from anybody. Most airlines are winding down operations and expect a shutdown starting in april and lasting for an indefinite time. I expect there will still be some planes flying for repatriation, but not many. JT has publicly stated that Canada will not get everyone home during this. Hopefully through the consulate/airlines/luck, you can hook up with a group of canadians that all want to get back. If you have a planeload of canadians in one spot, I suspect the odds are better than you will actually get a flight. Flights that long will likely require consular assistance as you will need to stop somewhere for fuel and most countries are not very amenable to visitors right now.

EDIT:
FWIW, even insider's dont' have information. I know some AC pilots who still have international flights booked later this month. They have not been told whether they are happening or not.

Maybe go to the Canadian consulate, if possible.

Clips stolen from around the web with some info so you don't need to go searching.

Coronavirus LIVE: Modi locks down India for 21 days from midnight
Coronavirus has infected over 400,000 and caused 16,578 deaths.

During the period of lockdown, goods services will keep on running. Metro and suburban train services have also been restricted in many cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai, Bangalore, etc. During the lockdown, state administrations have been advised to keep the essential services running. Hospitals, medical stores grocery and vegetable shops are asked to function normally.

You flew to India and you don't even have a pension or investments or some form of income in Canada?

You have a family support network here with a couple weeks of extra food supplies for you?
You would be no better here so far and nobody wants to fly passenger airplanes right now, it would need to be a military thing and that ain't happening.

Thanks All for the helpful responses.

The lock down in India is police-enforced and being Canadian is turning out to be a liability (don't get me wrong, I love my country and am a proud Canadian, it is the locals viewing foreigners with suspicion). No cabby is willing to drive to the airport for fear of getting the contamination from abroad. Offices are closed, there is no metro service and being out on the road requires an identity card that shows employment with an essential service.

So, the plan is to hunker down and wait till the dust settles. Fortunately, fruits etc are relatively inexpensive (compared to back home), so I should be able to eke out a living.

There may be a less number of COVID-19 cases here, either due to under-reporting or as others say the high temperature (37C today).

Stay safe fellow citizens and thanks for the feedback.

re: income
yes I have investment income that is geared to a 'normal' life, never anticipated this pandemic, no pension as I worked on a contingent basis, reasons why I have to watch expenses.

Call the consulate or visit it and be prepared to wait. AC had notice on their phone system that to get home you will need a code from the consulate in order to book tickets.

it’s your only option now. Airlines won’t fly without govt approval to any foreign destination.

You don't owe anyone an explanation, your reasons are your own and shouldn't be anyone else's business.

Stay safe and good luck.

We all do,
be well and best wishes,
Maybe the Canadian consulate or Canadian anything is accepting job applications over there :) does not hurt to ask,
when you show up at the door the first time, don't look desperate look helpful ;)

Say HI!
I HAVE MEDICAL TRAINING if you have it :ROFLMAO: right now that is worth a lot more then a BS anything.

Good luck @Chris-CJ stay safe/healthy and hopefully this passes soon and your able to get home.

I find this information a little tough to believe but I’m going to mention it anyways. A friends sister was stuck in Ecuador and AC was supposed to fly her out last Saturday. They didn’t come. So I talked to him today and she is home now, apparently she contacted the U.S embassy there and they got her a flight to Florida where she was able to make her own flight arrangements home. Again I find it a stretch to think the U.S is helping Canadians get home but he has no reason to tell me a story. Since your stuck anyways it might be worth a call.

Its probably about the numbers. If they have enough people to send a plane and and an empty seat, hopefully they will be helpful. Also, they probably have transport planes out the wazoo.

Best of luck Chris. Keep us updated on your adventure. Stay safe.

Some governments step up big-time.

An Austrian RTW motorcycle couple I know were stranded in the middle of nowhere in Colombia. The Austrian government chartered a flight for them to Bogota, where they were able to fly back to their home country. They were only two of four people on the plane. That's quite amazing.
