Anybody tired of the Teacher's Strikes?

Teachers and students here don't realize how good they have it. I grew up in Kenya, school started at 6.45am, ended at 5pm, I remember getting beat up in school (by the teachers, that was discipline), detention was humiliation and kneeling all day, If the teacher beat a kid, the parents blame the kid for making a mistake. From kindergarten onward, students are ranked according to their grades and it's made open, so everyone know's whose dumb and who is smart to pick on. Needless to say, when moving here the learning material was years behind, what was taught there in Grade 3, they teach in grade 6 here.

Teachers got little to no money there unless they were in the private sector, the teachers worked 3x harder than the ones I had here to make sure all the students lead a better life than them, even if it was disciplined.

my neighbor is a teacher, she lives the most chill life I know, spend holidays in Florida, got an RV to chill on weekends up North, great benefits and retirement plans, she's always gardening in the summer and couldn't be happier.

My mom was a middle school teacher who beat her students at school and me at home for discipline and out of line behaviours.
It's an accepted practice (or it used to be. Not anymore, I heard).

When I came to Canada, I could not believe how ****** kids were behaving towards own parents and teachers (except recent immigrant kids like myself).



Having said that, maybe Asian teachers, though paid less, had easier time dealing with kids. Kids listened when you beat them. It wasn't even vilant beating either. It was reasonable beating (lol).

Can we allow beating ****** brats and pay teachers less? It'll do good for the society and government budgets.

I used to think like the above. Our first child was so well behaved and compliant. Then we had the twins. Don't worry, when you have your "nightmare" child, all us "bad" parents will be around to support you. Every child is different. Some are compliant, and some are defiant.

there are exceptions but I still think most of it is bad parenting and coddling .

Agree mostly with one small thing, most adults are indeed lactose intolerant to some degree! We are the only mammal that drinks another mammal's milk regularly beyond infancy and we aren't evolved to do that efficiently. The giant dairy lobbyists know this and work hard against it.

I am lactose sensitive, I can eat hard cheeses, mozzarella, cheddar etc, but a piece of cheese cake, or feta on salad, and I am heading for a bad day of being in the office. Not made up, I don't pretend to be a victim either, just avoid what doesn't work for me.

No denying parental failures are raising idiots who get a pass by being prescribed drugs instead of being called out on being a brat with bad parents ....many today want to be victims and have some kind of “disease “ from lactose intolerant to ADD to allergies . Mostly fake and self diagnosed on the internet . Also encouraged by society and doctors who say it’s not your fault you just need medication.
A good beating now and again for the kids and parents would cure that crap fast .
i was sent to boarding school at 7 years old ( cue the jokes about how my parents didn’t like me) .......parents these days think their 25 year old is a kid who needs to be spoon fed still. Sad how weak people have become and how they wear that weakness as a badge of honor.

I found out 5 years into knowing my ex sister in law that supposedly she has "ADD" or some other learning disability. It was total bs, there was nothing wrong with her. She held down two part time jobs and part time school while being in her early twenties.
Just because you suck at math and would rather daydream about teen dramas doesnt mean you have a learning disability.

A girl in several of my York university math classes would never write tests or exams with us. She told me she had a learning disability and was allowed 2x the standard amount of time to write any test or exam, so she would write it in a different room at a different time.
Ironically enough, considering this thread; she is now a public school Math teacher.

Random thoughts:
Current spending is ~$12,200 per student according to the Canadian Taxpayers' Federation.
At 25 students, that's $300,000 per year, per class. ~80% of which goes to various salaries.
Enrollment has been going down, but went up last year.
Ford increased Education spending by 1.2 billion dollars over what Wynne spent.
For me the main issue isn't funding, but getting the kids all onboard with getting along and learning.
Kids appear to be getting meaner in the class.
There appear to be more special needs kids in the classes.
Borderline kids may imitate the behaviour of others who are misbehaving, exacerbating the problem.
Wynne increased funding to try and address the in classroom issues.
The issues haven't gone away.

Its the coddling of children these days that is the problem. They do not fear adults. Bullies are looked upon as victims. People turn a blind eye to bullying. Some kids need a good beating, its the only way they will change. No amount of talking or sending them home for vacation (suspension) is going to ever work.

Maybe it isnt a coincidence that the rise of all these issues has coincided with the decline in the number of male educators, the rise of "progressive" ideas in the education system, including the idea that energetic boys are a bad thing or that there is something wrong with them.

I never understood why Western society won't just straight up post everyone's grades; I don't give a **** about the average because the average bar is too low. By the time I went into university, I became a hyper competitive ******* that would find people who regularly got 80%+ and beat them. I ended up with a great group of friends that regularly tried to out do each other and we all ended up graduating with high honors.

...it's like the current trend is to promote unmotivated *****. But hey, at least that makes it easier for me to win!

Just gonna throw this out there that bullies are often victims due to ****** household situations. That doesn't make it okay to bully though, and those bullied should solve the problem themselves either via brute force or diplomacy. I learned very early on in grade 2 that punching a racist **** in the face was the fastest way to end bullying lol

Just to set the record straight, ADD is not a learning disability. There's actually arguements quite the opposite, they learn at an accelerated rate.

I was diagnosed with ADHD very young, took meds until I was 18. Essentially your mind just does not stop spinning, anything you master becomes boring instantly. Thus anything other then the task at hand becomes your new 'short lived' focus and so on.

Being extremely impulsive is also another symptom and one I still suffer from.

Huh, maybe I have ADHD. But then again, I was never tested for it and my mom's discipline, though at the time sucked, seems to have worked. I think.

I remember being bullied at school too, I moved around a lot as a kid, 5 schools before entering high school and another 2 in high school -- as a new kid I was usually a fresh target. After loosing my teeth in grade 2, my grandfather (a 5'9 135lbs wiry fighting Irishman) taught me how to stare down bullies. He also taught me how to deliver a haymaker -- that lesson has helped me out more than a few times!

There are some rumblings that this a defacto lockout. The theory is, after the lost days from previous strikes, plus 10 more, losing more days could put the school year in jeopardy. That could allow the province to prevent any more strike days prior to the end of the school year. I haven't fact checked this to see if it is possible, but it seems plausible.

No mention as to whether Dougie is going to continue his "Support for Parents" payments for the two weeks. My guess is no, but financially the full school closure is going to cost parents a hell of a lot more than the occasional strike days.

Would be a good time for the province to do a lockout. Lets see whether they like to feel the pain they have inflicted on families.

The teachers will keep getting paid over the extra two weeks so it is not the same as a lock-out for them...

Catholic teachers almost always fold first but then they will have a me too clause, if the other unions get a better deal theirs is now void and they automatically get that new deal. The union understands that the biggest education cost savings is to shut them down and roll them into public, so they never want to push the situation.

With so many families/kids travelling over March Break (like Dougie said to do...) it is likely the best situation. You cannot trust people to self isolate if they travel, worst yet they are always sending sick kids to school, this would have been no different. Forced isolation, more or less.
