Vintage insurance - here we go again.

So I contact Dalton-Timmins about insuring a 1981 motorcycle that I've just purchased. Their first quote comes in at over $1100 a year, which is double what I'm paying now for basic on my 2006 KLR with Desjardin.
When I remind the agent that I'm looking for VINTAGE insurance, not regular use he drops that to $588 a year. When I ask if I can waive the collision/comprehensive he says no, its a mandatory part of the package.
For something that's going to see less than 2,000kms a year this is ridiculous - anyone have any other suggestions ?

Oh yeah - and I'd still need an appraisal done even if I didn't care about C&C.

Insurance people are such idiots when it comes to motorcycles, they just don't get it.

I don't bother keeping full time insurance on my antique bikes, my insurer lets me call and swap bikes whenever I want. This works for me as I never have a situation where 2 bikes are being ridden at the same time, I'm the only rider.

I keep my extra bikes in my locked garage, my insurer has them listed as property covered for fire and theft under my home insurance.

I'll look into that, thanks Mike !

The alternative is to take them apart, itemize them as specialty machine parts and spread them all around the garage in boxes then double the fire and thief coverage on the building plus contents (y) Also keeps the wife happy that you don't have too many motorcycles sitting around in the garage.

I let her park her car in there once in a while.
... and her vintage motorcycle ;) I always just thought of it as an old bike but apparently it is now vintage

They just don't care - apparently, there is no money in insuring motorcycles. Back when I was with State Farm (standalone moto policy) I would get weekly emails/calls begging me to take on life and/or home insurance with them. My agent was audibly relieved to lose my business to Rider's Plus after a year.

They see us as an add-on product, not a thing in itself.

I've spent some time talking to MC insurance execs, I think it's more that they don't have the resources to devote to MCs -- too small a market split between too many companies. Occasionally smaller insurers devote resources to really understanding the premium/payouts and you get some reasonableness, you are seeing that with Echelon right now -- they are sometimes 1/2 the price in the lower risk segments of the market.

This is never going to change as long as the province keeps their fingers in the pie. They get big $$$ from insurance companies -- Ontario and Insurance are in a cozy relationship -- neither has much motivation to change.

It's vintage when I'm trying to sell old stuff for max return. I've seen a difference when listing stuff for sale. Old item listed....No bites. Change the title to "vintage" and there's interest.

I've seen a few of your ads, it's true lol. In fact your last r6 could be sold as vintage.

This is true. I have my husqvarna te450 with Desjardins, no other business with them and I pay $89/year for liability.
I get an email every two weeks asking me to let them quote my other business.
I have 3 bikes, two cars and the house with Td, been with them since 2009 and I'm happy with my rates so why change.

I’ve often wondered about this.
My dream bike was the Honda RC51. They can be had for a reasonable price now and I could tinker and detail/ restore it. Maybe take it out a couple times a year on a short scoot. But realistically my current ride is all the power, more comfortable and practical. I just want it to park in the garage mostly because it was my dream bike back when it was current and I could buy one for under $5000
Can you get reasonable collector policies for a bike like this?
I’m 43 with 4 years bike insurance, I have a 2015 ktm 1190 Adventure it sees 10,000km year. I have a Shelby Cobra Replica that sees about 5000km per year and that’s between my dad and myself. It cost $490 year that is more than fair.
The RC51 would see probably only 1000km year if that.

Who's your insurer that does this? I searched high and low and couldn't find anyone that would do it. This is exactly what I need.

Update - Hagerty's quoted me $212/year. Now to see if they'll fulfill their promise.

Hagerty insures motorcycles? Damn, I just assumed they didn't because they don't list them on their site. I have a policy with them for one of my cars.

Nope. You'll get an email from them shortly that tells you they don't insure MCs in Ontario.
