Marmora mine to Bancroft

Hey guys
I’m fairly new to adventure bikes, but I’m starting to get a little more adventurous and ride off road.
Still very green when it comes to riding the big girl in the dirt. Looking for rail beds and gravel roads for now. Still running the stock Conti trail attack tires.
Back in early 2000’s I was riding ATV’s and used to ride around the mine area and there was a rail line that ran north. I was told you could get all the way to Bancroft on this. I never tried on my atv because at that point in my life I wanted to climb hills, rail berms, and hit jumps not cruise a rail line to no where.

My goal in purchasing this bike was to take back roads and light trails. So far been riding 99% black top.
I’ve ventured onto a couple trails but keep ending up in sand. I’m not ready for sand and mud at this point. She’s a big tall bike and I’m a newb with short legs.
Before you tell me I should have bought a smaller bike. I bought the 1190 because I wanted to be able to do it all. Most of my rides are 450+ km of pavement venturing down the odd bit of gravel.

;) Ok, I won't tell you, you should have bought a smaller bike.
You do have some really spectacular riding terrain up there if you are allowed to ride any of it.

Has anyone ventured up this rail line or is it atv use only?
I had thought I found an old rail line near Lindsay only to find out its for atv, bicycling, walking. No motorcycle. Wtf is that.
You can ride an atv but not a motorcycle?

In the end if I give up on the dirt and only ride pavement I will still not regret my decision to trade in my Harley touring bike for the KTM.
I love this bike. I have all the luggage space of the Harley, all the power I could ever want or need, and almost as comfortable.
If not a dirt bike it’s one hell of a sport touring.

And they are cool with snowmobiles too. Is so wrong on so many levels, but the public really does have a hate on for those noisy darn motorcycles.

Noise doesn’t make any sense. I’ve had snowmobiles, dirt bikes, atv, boats, street bikes and toy cars. My ADV bike is the quietest toy I own.
With my controversial slip on it actually sounds a lot like a quitter version of my old trx 450R
ATV and sleds are way louder than than most bikes.

Totally agree, now all we need to do is get the general public to support motorcycle riding instead of the way it always has been.
... I'm thinking that for some reason electric motorcycles might stand a chance.

That trail is the Hastings Heritage Trail. I ride it north and south of Bancroft on my blue plated Yamaha WR450F. Lots of ATVs and some motorcycles. It almost always in very good condition near Bancroft, but there are a couple of short sandy sections. I don’t know what condition the rest of the trail is. I would expect it to be similar.

Abandoned railway beds are great, but they don't have hills, that's why the railway put them there :| I need to go off the side of the tracks to ride the fun elevation stuff. Let me know if you find such a place! :D

That trail is multi-use and yes bikes are allowed. To purchase a trail pass go here
Home - The Trails . While there you can request a hard copy of the trail map and check out the interactive online maps.
I'll be riding over there next week as I have a cottage booked just north of Havelock on Oak lake.

It's partly about quiet and partly about trail maintenance -- dirtbikes really tear up multi-use trails.

So far I ventured into the ganny and the raglan pit areas but the sand is spooky to say the least. I’m getting better at not fighting the bike and trying to stay loose.
I know it gets better if I go faster but my instinct tells me to slow down and clam up.
It seems with old age comes self preservation.
I will have to pick up a pass and make a point of going.
Generally I don’t plan my rides. I just wake up jump on the bike and go get lost.
Left right left right see where I end up kinda thing. Last weekend I woke up at 5:00 am and was 250km into my ride before 9:00. Rode over 400km with no planning.
My plan was to be able to just turn down any rode I choose and not be limited like I was with the Harley. Atv had a he same issue, sometimes the trail would end. My atv was not very street friendly. The big KTM is supposed to be the answer.
Just needs a rider mod.

Any how that’s enough screen time. I’m heading out for a ride. Ttyl

My trails need more riding or lots more Deer or something, they are starting to get over-grown.
Trials bikes don't leave much foot print.

(y) short solo practice ride sounds good, what could possibly go wrong.

Where are you based? I was at Marmora Mine on my KTM last week. Not off-road though. Just rummaging in the rockpiles for fun.

There’s the K&P trail from Sharbot Lake to Calabogie that is a rail bed. There’s another trail that runs east to west at Sharbot Lake too. I’ve done a bit of the western one up to Bolingbrook Rd before but I don’t know if you need a pass for that. It’s really confusing with all the different trails, passes and regulations.

Wait, there are different kind of passes?

I thought if you buy the pass from OFTR then you're good to go on any trail in Ontario?

Maybe I’m mistaken then but isn’t the OFTR pass different from the one in the link above?

Yes and different from the Ganny pass as well.

The Hastings Heritage Trail is a fantastic trail to get more confident on your KTM. When you're ready there are some more challenging side trails that run off. I ride the main trail with my 3yr old routinely. I've even ran a few kms on my Monster for poops and giggles! You can go for 100's of kms for days! Watch for locals in trucks at night in full size trucks! ??

I live in Bowmanville now but 12 years ago I use to poke around the mine from time to time on my race quad. Never really went all that far because fuel was always a concern. I had to run 118 race gas and a tank didn’t really get me all that far.

What about trail pass?
How much is this enforced?
I don’t have a problem paying for a pass if it becomes a thing. Not really into buying a pass to ride 10km and decide meh not my thing anymore.
Like I said before even as a street bike I’m happy with my purchase.
I just would like to try off road because I can and it’s kinda what the bike was built for.
Now I’m reading there is no one trail pass that covers all Ontario?
Is this the case you need to pay each region to go on the trail in that area?
How do you know if you cross into another area?
Back when I had a sled it was just insurance, an OFSC pass and an Ontario plate and you were good.
