My renewal is up and I got a nice letter from M&W stating Echelon has dropped them. Then an even nicer email quote +$1092 (with intact) more then I was paying previously. I called in and asked if this was a serious ligitmate quote. Yes best they could do. Ya not going to happen.

Background for your info to compare.

Yes a bunch of strikes against me. I have been riding with just liability only to keep things affordable. Have been paying $1749 with Echelon.

I've called around Streetrider (Young insurance) and Riders Plus both still work with Echelon and can match my previous rate...whew..

I tried dejardans, but that felt like I was being data scraped with all the questions just to get a quote. Finally just hung up on them, might try again.

Now what is interesting I called TD and they gave me a pretty good quote of $1966 full coverage. I have my home with them, so I saved $90 on this combo. Now what is even funnier the agent said they don't like motorcycles and I should be able to get a better rate someplace else. I found it strange as this rate was pretty good.

Still calling around. The thing about Echelon being bought out by CAA worries me a bit, if they decide to stop working with all brokers and this is just a in between moment for them until they get around to it with the rest of the brokers. With TD you know they are not going anyplace.

I already warned everyone this was coming!

Yes I remember, I was just waiting for my letter to appear.
Just considering the longer term implications of CAA buying out Echelon.

I'm all for saving money but I'd be putting full coverage on your bike. It's a really nice ride and Harley parts aren't all that cheap. By all means do your thing but liability is the big chunk of your premium the collision and comprehensive isn't usually terrible.

I've been with Td since 2010. House, 2 cars, 2 bikes. Every year I shop around, every year I renew with Td. I get solid discounts for all of it, multi-line, multi-car, multi-bike. I pay 600ish per year for each bike, full coverage with 2m liability and I've upped the accident benefits.
I also like the payments, 7 payments march to September, nothing through the winter.

Something recently changed with TD. Their call centers haven taken a turn for the worse. Every single time I called them in the last 3-4 months, I was on hold for atleast 40 minutes. Sometimes more than an hour. And not just me, others are reporting the same.

For now, I dumped them. But we need TD. They insure anything and everyone

The only time I've ever talked to them is to add or change a policy, no issues so far.

Tried calling TD today for a quote. On hold for about 40 minutes before someone picked up. Put me on hold to create a file and didn't come back for what was supposed to be 30 seconds, hung up after 5 minutes.

Pass...

Lol sounds about right. I was on hold for exactly 40 min when I called to cancel. Few days before that, I was on hold for over an hour, gave up and hung up.

Yup. TD is great so far. Aviva dropped me. Everywhere else quoted $1400-$2200 for a V-Strom. Wife is with TD and I got a crazy good deal with TD. $215 a month paid 4 months of the year. Just as good as Aviva.

$215 over 4 months because your policy started in May-June, right ? If so, I think thats because it's prorated. You're paying for the months that are left in the current riding season. TD collects premium over the actual riding months from March till September. Your premium for next year would likely be $1400+, if that's true.

Crap ?

Are there any brokers still dealing with Echelon? Or being bought by CAA, do you need to deal with CAA directly?

If just finding someone else who can/will continue through Echelon that's probably your best bet.

Sure glad my wife has a corporate deal now for insurance. I'm paying <$400/year for my VTX.

Yes both Young Insurance and RidersPlus still are with them, but for how long since CAA bought Echelon. This is my concern. I could renew with either of them and find out next year I am in the same position depending on what CAA does.

Dalton Timmins (spelling) still works with them.

Oh I know.. paid $15 for 2 screws from HD. But some other stuff isn't as bad. Yup I like my ride as well.

I am considering TD since this is the first quote I have had under $2000 (kinda mental barrier and financial one) which has had full coverage.
And I might be able to rejig my car rate to balance out the additional expenses.

Well, you’re another year down the road by then, and with another year of experience under your belt other doors may open for alternatives. The insurance market changes regularly.

Win win, IMHO.

Insurance for bikes is a tricky business, I've been studying it for a while an I'm starting to understand it a bit better. I have found the best experience and prices for riders with clean records and at least one car or home to bundle will get the best treatment from TD, Desjardins or the Personal -- all direct insurers. For riders with any any driving/riding blemishes (tickets, claims, suspensions, cancellations etc) brokers might be better.

A few tips:
- pick a bike 300cc and down until you have 2-3 years experience if you are =<25, do the same for lowest rates at any age
- bundle at least one other item -- your car, truck, house for best rates with direct insurers. Be patient, you may wait 10 minutes to talk to a direct rep, but that's often faster than waiting for a return call from a broker.
- when a brokerage advertises themselves as motorcycle specialists -- don't assume every agent has that expertise. Talk with the agent, if you say you have a DL650, or an YZFR3 and they ask who makes that? Consider that a clue. Experts will be able to tell the right story to underwriters for the best possible pricing.

For OP: TD and Desjardins will probably be the best. Check their affinity groups, if you belong to any of them you might see a substantial discount. If that doesn't work out, I have found Dalton Timmins has always directed me and others to agents with tons of MC experience -- thich has led to some great pricing.
