There are riots in the southern states over the planned removal of civil war statues and I have mixed emotions.
A few years ago there were protests over the flying of the Confederate Flag.
At Gettysburg there are statutes to the generals that served there. If the horse was standing on all four legs the general served. If the horse has a leg raised the general was wounded and if the horse was reared up he died. Are they to be torn down?
Are they symbols of oppression or historical memorials?
Being white I have limited vision of the situation but I'm concerned about destroying history. It should be clear that the monuments are historic items representing a long dark period in American history.
Up here some time back there was a movement to ban Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" because of anti Semitic overtones.
Similarly "Porgy and Bess" faced criticism because of racial stereotyping.
