1984 has offiically become an instruction manual.

The German Interior Ministry has announced its intention to combat so-called “fake news” on social media by setting up a “defence centre against disinformation,” ahead of next year’s federal election.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière has expressed concern over what the government deems to be “fake news” ahead of the federal election next year. The ministry has made what some may consider to be a Orwellian proposal to counter the issues.

A new arm of the ministry will be created to defend against fake news, with one member of the ministry saying the defence centre against disinformation “should be negotiated very quickly,” Der Spiegel reports.

According to the Interior Ministry, the rise of fake news could directly influence the federal election and some even claim the presidential election in the U.S. had been heavily influenced by the spread of rumours on social media platforms. “The acceptance of a post-fact age would be equivalent to a political capitulation,” the ministry officials said.

According to the ministry, the most susceptible groups to false information and rumour are those from the Russian-German community and those living in Germany with a Turkish background. Earlier this year, Russian-Germans were outraged by a report that said a 13-year-old girl had been raped by an asylum seeker, and while there have been multiple cases of asylum seekers sexually abusing underage children over the past year, the girl admitted the story had been made up.

Don Henley said it well.

We got the bubble headed
Bleached blonde
Comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash
With a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation
Is the head dead yet
You know the boys in the newsroom
Got a running bet
Get the widow on the set
We need dirty laundry

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

The present controlling party of Germany is entering an election with a leader that currently sits at a record low in approval rating. Control of the narrative, to me, is a desperate move towards maintaining power.

Also, screw the NYTimes.. Might as well be a tabloid these days.

Way too many people believe and quote fake news. The garbage I see on FB astounding. I guess hyped up titles, pseudo science and fake news are big money since they generate traffic. People should at least check with snoopes.com and be taught a bit about internet traffic economics before being allowed on the internet. With all this freedom of information it seems most people are actually getting dumber and more dissinformed.

I'm sorry what?

Why would a nuke possessing defense minister of any country be relying solely on any news article; we don't need a ministry to protect dumb as fawk politicians, we need smarter politicians.

Hahahaaa!! Good one.

I understand the right wing's angst over this since the "vast majority of fake election news was geared toward conservatives, after hoax content creators found comparatively little appetite for their content on the left." Would be a shame to lose one of your most powerful propaganda tools, right?

Interesting article there... noticeably devoid of substance, I like the graph on one of there linked post which shows all the "major news outlets" loosing viewership in the closing months of the election and the "fake news" gaining....

Maybe, just maybe, those with an ounce of critical thought, regardless of political leanings, had enough of the Times, Post and CNN's of this world pumping out pro Clinton prop. You think all the Bernie supporters just bought the **** they were fed? The MSM and Democrats don't have "fake news" to blame, only their own inability to report the truth and be truthful.

I've always been slightly left of centre; but the far left have gone too far and consequently people like myself have been pushed right... The left needs to quit looking for others to blame and take ownership. For a start, own the rigging the primaries to run the weaker the candidate, and losing... Or is that Russia's fault.

Yeah, there's some complete fabrication out there.. but it is in no way a) exclusive to one side of the aisle and b) true of everything being labelled "fake".

Now, are you really willing to let government dictate what stories you get to see? Are you really that daft?

...wait for it...

noticeably devoid of substance...

I would never have guessed. You strike me as alt-right all the way.

There are no absolutes. Free speech does not include the right to scream "Fire!" in a crowded theater. If the right-wing wants to pull the equivalent stunt by running false stories that can and do lead to international incidents then of course democracy needs to counter in constructive ways. I see this as little different than ISIS using "social media" to recruit for its cause; are you averse to platforms like, say, Facebook and perhaps even governments cracking down on that?

Why not be outraged at the incidences of "fake news" as much as efforts to crack down on it?

people know fake news if they have average or better intelligence.
our own mainstream news produces more misinformation than truth.
this "stop fake news" is simply an attempt at censorship.

The average person pays more attention to the Kardashians (spelling? sorry, I DON'T pay attention to them) than to political events or environmental issues that affect the world. Those people vote and form opinions based on whatever short sound bites they hear, biased by whatever doesn't conflict with their own little world. I recognize the need for free speech and the need for multiple viewpoints to be presented. But blatant falsehoods need to be debunked and filtered out.

Look at the "anti-vaxxers" for an example of what can happen.

Okay, can we apply this to all sides? As demonstrated by the Russian Hack story, which as of yet is still nothing more than "an unnamed source says", only one side seems to be subject to the "fake news" label. Is it not dangerous to allow those same forces to work against stories they don't like? Why does the Post or Times get to put out articles without being subject to the same rigorous screening?

When I mentioned a lack of substance in an earlier linked article, I was referencing an entire page built on the idea of the whole election result hinging on fake stories. So where were all the examples? Why can't people seem to accept the lose on it's merits? She was an atrocious candidate who's shady dealings came back to haunt her entire party, yet nobodies talking about it. Why? because it was true.

Why do some around here think far right outlets are the only ones guilty of false or misleading stories? Talk about bias. This all just boils down to deflection... Forget what actually happened and look over here.. It's really nothing more.

@blackfin

Look! Neil didn't support HC and has doubts about AGW! He must be alt-right (implying not just right leaning, but some crazed extremist) haha... Look back over the years and see what I've had to say on gun laws, for one, Mr. Fin... Yeah I'm so far right

Which side has a penchant for spuriously constructing narratives again?
