Merc-AMG to buy MV Augusta?
German giant is gearing up to acquire classic Italian motorbike maker, insiders tell TG

Pat Devereux 19 August 2014
Mercedes-AMG is readying a potential bid to buy storied Italian motorcycle maker MV Augusta, a company insider has revealed to Top Gear.

Having lost Ducati to Audi in 2012, despite having a deep relationship with the Bologna-based bike brand, Mercedes-AMG is now looking at a deal to snap up Italy's other member of red-painted motorcycling royalty.

MV Augusta has been sold a number of times over the past two decades: to Cagiva in 1999; to Lotus parent Proton in 2004; to a finance company in 2005; to Harley Davidson in 2008; and then finally to Claudio Castiglione, the architect of Ducati's great renaissance, in 2010.

Castiglione died a year later, but not before he had sketched out a plan to revive the once-great Italian marque. His holding company now owns and runs the MV Augusta.

No details of the deal have yet been given, but AMG executives tell us they are already deep into exploring the possibilities of a tie-up.

The AMG tie-up with Ducati was scheduled to deliver co-branded motorcycles in a bid to extend the brand into a younger audience - and boost AMG's green credentials.

The degree of certainty of the AMG MV Augusta deal has been increased by the presence of Investindustrial, a private equity fund, in other Mercedes-AMG business.

The fund, which is owned by the Bonomi family, was the owner of Ducati prior to the sale to Audi. It also owns a 37.5 per cent in Aston Martin, who AMG is working closely with supplying engines and electrical systems for the next-generation AM models.

So the two groups know each other well and have mutual interests. Maybe including MV Augusta in the not-too-distant future...

They didn't even spell it properly... heh.

They like what Audi did with the Ducati purchase? Maybe...

If only Greece had some motorcycle manufacturers, the economic crisis in Europe could be resolved lickety-split.

what does a car company want with a bike company?

Brand image, technology transfer, cross-marketing. I think it's a good thing.

The motorcycle business is small in North America but much bigger elsewhere in the world. Honda Motor makes between 3 and 4 million cars and trucks per year, but around 15 million motorcycles.

Doosh merger...but they should buy Aprilia, which has a real racing program.

MV has won 37 championships and is currently in second place in WSS and competing in WSBK (development year).

When it comes to research, the author of the quoted article did very little of it. Claudio Castiglione did buy the company but under his leadership, MV was just about bankrupt. His son took over after his death and made the company what it is today. I profitable Italian motorcycle company that Mercedes want to buy.

+1
It would be a great to have shared Mercedes engineering on the new bikes.

Great watch on MV Agusta - lots of critical info missing in the original article.

MV of 37 championships has nothing to do with this company. The name got sold off decades ago.

i believe ford is affiliated with yamaha as gm is with suzuki, that said. ill be surprised if theres anything left for them to buy after HD got through pickin the bones clean when they owned them a few years back. lol

then again, who cares. if they cant compete, turn out the lights, party's over!!!

The "Augusta" thing is really irritating... Top Gear, of all places, should do a bit better. I don't expect North Americans to get it right as much.

And I'd love to see a better-financed MV. Hopefully this happens and AMG is willing to put some investment into it.

Anyone know if AMG purchasing MV would count towards those CAFE fleet emissions/fuel economy standards? Like how Aston put a sticker on a Scion iQ and called it the Cignet to lower their fleet average?

Second in WSS...no race program to see here, move along.

They are actually third in the WSS constructors championship, of a 5 make series. Hardly WSB or MotoGP.

They have a whopping 20 points in WSB for second to last place, only 320 off of Kawasaki. Count Agusta would be rolling in his grave.
