dog food selection?

Ok so I have a 3 year old boxer and have been feeding him blue buffalo wilderness( salmon) since he was a puppy. He likes it and does great with it, but it is quite pricey. I pay $69 plus tax at least once every 3 weeks.
Wondering if any of you could recommend a good grain free one comparable to blue buffalo? I was looking at the simply nourish one and it looked good and around $20 less a bag... then there is a grain free one that is a petsmart brand that is almost half the cost... but I have no idea about it quality at that price point.

Any info would be appreciated!

I find global is about $5 more per bag when comparing to Pjs Pets for the acana. Both of which have a loyalty program based on 10 bags purchased.
 
My girl had a really sensitive stomach as a pup, eventually settling on Taste of the Wild http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/

It's not sold at PetSmart, but you can find it at Global and it's part of the loyalty program there too. I can't remember how much it is, but we go through one of the big 30-lb bags every few months for a 55-lb retriever.
 
TOTW was on my radar but it is manufactured by diamond pet foods and they have a pretty bad track record. There was just a recall on the TOTW last year due to salmonella.

I also have one named Tito, he's a 6.5 year old typical boxer lover boy... I've fed him the top ****, Innova, Innova Evo, Orijen, Taste of the wild etc. About a 2 years ago I heard about Costco dog food and though I'd give it a try. I was kind of skeptical at first because its about half the price.

At the start of this year I started noticing a new one "Nature's Domain", its 32-35 bucks for a bag and is their grain free option. It comes in turkey meal and sweet potato or salmon and sweet potato. My guy eats whatever I give him so I swap every time to give him variety, he just won't eat it dry. He always needs some cottage cheese, an egg or a few spoons of yogurt mixed in to put it down. I don't blame him, if you put dry cereal in front of me I'd be like **** that **** too...

My dog has always had good stools and shiny coat and no doggie odour or bad breath, so I can't speak for that. But I can tell you things like that suffer from a result a poor quality food and the commercial/grocery store brands are the worst. and this thread is useless without pics...

Ah, I almost forgot about that. I think we kept her on it because all the other dry foods we'd tried gave her an upset stomach, including Acana.
 
I'm displeased with the Nature's Domain stuff ever since I bought 1 bag and saw that the sealing was incomplete. (Maybe 2 inches unsealed.) So check your bags first if buying that. I gave it anyway, the dog didn't care for it much so I didn't buy it again.
 
Beautiful dog!! Im at work so dont have my pics on this comp or else would show my guy. I have heard about that costco one but have never seen it, will def go check it out. This is the petsmart brand one.

I know you said you switch it up, but dont you slowly introdude the new food, otherwise I would think it would upset the stomach.

I find he's not too picky and takes to it as long its not given dry. I empty the food into one of my old protein powder buckets to keep it fresh and airtight, it usually lasts him about a week and I get a months worth out of the bag. I buy a new bag when there's about a weeks worth left. When that bucket is down to half I'll fill it with the new stuff (turkey meal or salmon), mix it up and after 2-3 days you've switched over. I don't even think he notices.

so your experience is limited to one bag, and you base your opinion on that?? That's fine I guess, but if you're going to be displeased it should be because of the quality of the food or your dog not reacting to positively, not because you got unlucky with one bag. I've been through about a dozen and have not noticed this, yet...its also something easily avoided, just take a quick look before you throw it in your cart.

best dog food is holistic blend. its not even in the dog food section in the supermarket you have to go to the organic section to find it. my 3 boys get that and fish oil capsules and coconut oil. bullmastiffs are super sensitive and I have had 2 live past 12. one is currently 9 and rocking like a pup.
 
sounds great but thats gotta be a pretty penny...I am trying to reduce my cost

Thats a little bit extreme....there are plenty good dog foods that will not cost you an arm and a leg...heck depending on breed and genetics the type of food wouldnt matter. before my boxer now I had a jack russell terrier and he ate the cheapest food as i didnt know any better. This dog lived for 18 years! 18 years man! Nothing holistic at all, so as much as I would like to provide my boxer like you do you're dogs, I think i can reduce my cost without giving him *****

I feed my dog that I have in the city with me Royal Canin. But the dogs at my farm get the cheapest possible dog food. Every dog I've owned at my farm has lived anywhere from 15 to 17 years of age. I've never had to take them to a vet for anything other than their yearly shots. They have hundreds of acres to run on so they don't require this fancy food. At least that's what I believe.

My (big breed) pups have sensitive stomachs and we're careful what we feed them....they get Fromm...a big bag of the stuff is $45 and contains top notch ingredients...we also add tinned tripe to this (stinks, but it's amazing for the dogs and they absolutely love the smell) and a capsule of glucosamine emptied on their meals each too, sometimes they will get a spoonful of lactose free natural yoghurt on their food too.

Cannot reccomend the tripe enough...if you can stomach the smell, the dogs go nuts for it and it's really healthy for them.

As for the grain free thing...we started with that, Acana, Orijen and then settled on Fromm as the dogs always did well on it and it doesn't contain any crap.

We buy our food at an independant pet store as we know the owner well and he always lets us try new things out for free before we commit to buying stuff all the time.
