I need a little clarification on a few things. My first question (irrelevent to insurance) is about Humber College's motorcycle program. I plan on getting my M1 by August 13'th, however, will I make it in time (60 days after receiving my M1) to be able to do the M1 exit test at Humber? I know drivetest's motorcycle road tests close on October 15th which is pretty early; is Humber the same way or do they run their road tests for longer?

Also, my second question is, is it worth it? I'm going to be 20 when I plan on buying my first bike if everything goes as planned this year (2013 Ninja 300), I will also have my G license by that point. I will have completed a Motorcycle course at Humber and I don't have any driving incidents -- not even a speeding ticket. But I'm afraid I'm going to buy my bike and go to insurance companies and theyre going to drop the ball of like a $5,000 a year insurance deal. My range of insurance is about $3,500 I wouldnt want to spend any more than that. What is the average insurance for riders who are just starting out? Like I try getting quotes but I can't get any because most results come up as "We can not find a quote for you". Hell, I even called allstate and they told me that they don't insure sportsbikes? This is something I really want to do, but I'm scared I'm going to buy my bike and get killed with the insurance, how was your insurance when you first started? And did any of you guys start riding at 20 years old or younger? Thanks for any responses and sorry if this is a common question.

Edit: If it helps, I got a quote from TDMotorcycle insurance which has a price of 3461.00 dollars but who knows if that will change in a year time.

When I did the course a few years ago, the "road test" was administered by the people running the course. Do the test on the last day of the program and take your paper to the MTO to upgrade your license.

In regards to insurance, call around. When I was 17 I insured my '94 GS500 for around $3200 liability only, with Jevco.
Don't bother with the online quotes at all, call them directly.

tl:dr
Got a quote for the ninja 300 non-abs for $146 from Desjardins. Liability + theft
19, m2 for 1yr, G2. Btw I live near Brampton :o
Hope this helps

Thank you for this, I didn't think Desjardins would insure me but they said they would so long as I have my M1, M2 and G by the date I purchased the bike. Here I am thinking I'm going to pay over $4000 a year just to insure myself for being a new rider with the m2 for less than a year; and they tell me I would pay $2981. I will keep calling around to find other insurance companies that will insure me.

P.S. that insurance tree thing that's stickied to this board is beyond poor. Should be updated or something...

As for Humber, make sure you can get booked in for their last class, (or sooner). Then you just need to get your M1 before the course starts.

I did mine very last minute at the end of last year. I was able to get booked in for their final weekend (Oct 27-28, 2012) and got my M1 the Tuesday or Wednesday before that. They teach you during classroom on Thursday night, then on the bike all Saturday and Sunday morning. Sunday afteroon everything wraps up with the M1 exit test. At that time, I only had my M1 for a few days. As long as you pass you get a sealed enveolope with all the required documentation for upgrade. Don't open that, but wait 2 months and bring it to the MTO, they'll upgrade your license on the spot.

So wait do I bring it to MTO or do I bring it to a Service Ontario? Or is either or acceptable?

Bring the paperwork to the MTO.

You'll go to Service Ontario to register your bike/get plates, or if you need to renew your driver's license or get a name/address change.

I brought mine to a DriveTest centre. I don't know if anywhere else can do it.

I think you're misunderstanding how the 60 day period works. You could get your M1 and take the college M1x course the next day... You have a minimum 60 day period BEFORE you can process your paperwork to upgrade to an M2. The Govt. does this to keep you from riding with a passenger, riding at night, and on the 401 for the first 60 days you have a motorcycle license. After you complete the M1x course you receive your upgrade paperwork (the test is administered on Sunday afternoon). You have the 30 day window after the mandatory 60 day waiting period to go back to the drive test center and have them process your paperwork to receive your M2.

Others have clarified this, but thank you again.

You should probably not complain too much about this tree. It's actually an excellent tool and definitely list the companies you should be calling. You called TD, did you call TD MM and Intact?

I have called those.

Can anyone give me a decent broker or company that WOULD insure someone who has had their M2 for less than a year? It is literally impossible. My friend who had his M2 for 15 minutes got insured with DesJardins, but I called them asking if there is a minimum period to wait and they said I must have my M2 for at least a year. There are so many contradictions between what I'm hearing it's unreal. If anyone could steer me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I've been calling constantly and getting the same answer from all these insurance companies. I plan on getting my bike next May (I would have my M2 for 7 months by then). All of this is just so confusing and frustrating especially when I hear people who are younger than me who get lower rates with companies. I need some broker names or companies that would help out.

There must've been a long line... -_-

Wasn't bad at all. If you go before work when they open, its pretty easy to be first in line. There were about 5 people in line before me, but they're always there for driver's tests, which is a different line altogether.

With the Jevco website finally up and running after days of trying to access it, I called a bunch of brokers who said they would see if some insurance companies would insure me. I told them my situation and apparently all seems to be fine. But this is exactly what happened when I called Desjardins, it was only until I called again to test to see if they would change their policy -- which they did.
