Bird Strike at 100kph

Sorry! No vids or pics. :( The one time I don't have my Gopro with me. Figures.

Anyways, I was heading home from nightshift. Was about 7am, bright and sunny and I was taking a backroad home. Bird came out of the bush, turned infront of me. (We're both heading in the same direction)
It juked and weaved before my helmet made it an accessory.

It completely shocked me as I have never encountered a bird that couldn't get out of the way. They are usually more agile.
My only reaction was to duck, but I couldn't get my head any lower cause my tank bag was in the way.

The impact was considerable. I think it was a Robin. Felt like someone hit me ontop of my head with a hammer.

No visable damage or gore to my Helmet. I hope there isn't any hidden damage.

Anyone else run a fowl like this?
(pun intended :lmao:)

Cute pun....I've almost taken on a vulture ( buddy behind me said it was real close - I did have to duck ). There were three on a carcass on open highway and clearly fat and heavy and having a hard time getting aloft.
That would not have been fun - they are big suckers.

I'm glad you described that as a hammer strike as I had a similar thing decades ago with my Bell Star - riding hwy 20 at about 110 - sunny day and bang ....something hit my helmet hard enough to make my ears ring....but I could find no evidence of it.
Must have been a bird strike coming from the side as I saw nothing.
Glad it didn't do more damage.

I think they've been drinkin some tainted water. I had one fly into the front of my bike last friday (no he didn't make it) and one I don't know how he escaped that flew right beside my head on the highway.

Nice Stories! Hitting a vulture would be real bad.

I really expected to pull into my garage and see feathers and blood all over my helmet. I was looking for an excuse to get a new lid. :p

Good reason to wear a helmet; full face one at that. It is shocking the amount of bugs and crap on my helmet when I get back.

Took a goose off the head at 110ish on my sled. Just about knocked me out, made me lose grip of the bars and almost fell backwards off the back. Must have injured it, because the next day we went back to that spot and it looked like a coyote got it.

Ive killed 3 birds with my truck in the last 2 weeks, all of them flew right in to it, one was jay sized and off the windshield. No idea whats up with that.

Good Lord... birds assassins!
Now pause for a second and think about what would have happened if instead of a full face you had a skull bucket.

Would not make a difference for me with the amount of upfront protection on the Burgman and the ST1100.
KLR yeah - but one maybe bird hit in 45 years riding....low incidence.

But yeah there are some size large bugs in Australia and II do tend to keep the visor down as well as the sunglasses on a bit more than here. Visor on my convertible I wear there has a permanent nick from some size large bug ....buddy thought maybe a rhinocerous beetle.

I think I hit a bird but not sure, I hit something with my knee doing about 200+km/h coming back back from muskoka last year. Not sure what it was but it exploded on my knee and ruined my pants. I was clean up what I could at the McDonald's rest stop.

I should have gone faster...I woudl have been well past that spot when the bird flew out.

I hit a sparrow (not sure of the name, it could had been something else of that size) once.

Half of it (literally, like if someone cut it with scissors) was stuck to the fairings. I do not know what happened to the other half... poor guy.

yea be careful out there, any roads north of steels, around 1am to 4am, family of raccoons, nockturnal birds, and animals cross roads, i almost crashed the other night, coming over a bridge, and 8 to 9 baby racoons crossing the road, and they all stopped i was hard on my brakes, barely missed them, then they ran into the other side once i stopped.

I too realised, lately these animals have for some reason lost their agility and even birds i've been noticing, have for some reason become dumber, usually they are fast enough to move out of the way.

I guess its true the earths fluctuating energy fileds are fking up their sense of direction, speed, and agility.lol

Personal experience the bike will not notice the crunch of a small raccoon - don't get too out of line avoiding them.
Birds in the early morning do tend to be stooopid.
