How bad is this?

Hey guys,

Was doing an oil change on my bike and I saw all this stuff on the screw. What does this mean for the bike? Is it an engine problem? Is it fixable? How long will my bike last?

Your drain plug needs a haircut.

Seeing as how you overflowed the post with details about the bike, I'm guessing it's fairly new, and it's reasonable for a bit of metal to stick to the magnet on the drain plug.

That's a typical Hyosung 250 drain plug situation. Check owners manual under "fuzz".

If the metal particles feel "gritty" when rubbed between your fingers, this doesn't bode well for your engine; it's an indicator of excessive wear or damage. On the other hand, if the particles become merely a black stain on your fingers when rubbed together and don't have a gritty, metallic feel, then that's OK.

On a bike that is still in its break-in period, it's normal for a minor amount of iron filings to show up on a magnetic drain plug. It's mostly from all the rough edges in the engagement dogs in the transmission - those are as-cast surfaces that need to be worn smooth. But not THAT much.

Hyosung? SELL.

I guess for a Hyosung that may be normal.
For any other engine that would be excessive amounts of particles.
I would say there is something wrong with that engine.
