Swiss golfer severely injures rider while drunk, flees country

I did not read the article.
What you posted here is flawed.
When you chose to travel to another country for whatever reason then you accept the rules of that land and must abide by it especially when you have done a something clearly wrong.
Pretty simple.

The adult world is more complicated than what we explain to nine year olds. Someone using the logic in your post would also accept the death penalty for drug residue on your luggage in asia, beheading for blasphemy in the middle east, or death for being gay in africa.

I'm sorry but the number she pulled on that poor rider is illegal in just about every country on this planet, except for select sub-Saharan African countries. Bottom line, she ruined someone's life and isn't paying for it.. And in any case:

1) Make sure you got no drug residue in your luggage when you travel to Singapore
2) Don't blaspheme in theocracies with tight laws
3) Don't pack fudge in Africa

If you travel to a country, you agree to abide by their laws. You don't, it's your problem. If I don't like the laws of a certain country, I avoid going there.

What you say is really asinine.
You go there, you do something wrong, your problem.
Actually nine year olds would probably due a better jobs running the world at this point.

Seriously, you sound like one of those whacked out scared people that you see on those shows like Doomsday Preppers.

Right on all points except Africa isn’t a country. Being Gay is not illegal in "Africa". It has different legal statuses throughout the African states.

That being said the point still stands. You need to be aware of the local laws when traveling even if you view the law as silly or even immoral (In some Muslim countries it is Illegal to eat and drink in public during Ramadan). But Gentleman paints a false dichotomy here drunk driving is illegal in both countries (Most in general) and is widely accepted without significant deviation that the act of DUI it a running away to protect yourself is moral wrong. This isn’t equivalent to running from a Bad or unfair law

Aware of that, just using the points mentioned by the other poster in the argument without making corrections. Muddies up the discussion without adding to it :)

It would be a false comparison if I were actually saying it was morally right to flee "bad" or "unfair" laws. My intent was to characterize the universal approach of people volunteering to do time, even when there are viable outs, as a lie we tell children.

My original point was that even though this woman seems like a psycho, she weighed the options, decided the U.S. justice system could not be relied upon to make a fair decision, and went back to her home country. Judging by the way the internet is handling her case, I'd say she shouldn't be allowed to drive and she should compensate the rider she apparently hit - but in the matter of betting her life on the fairness of the plea bargaining system, she made the right call.

What are you huffing dude?! Rich brat didn't wanna face the consequences for ruining someone's life, so she fled. A fair decision would have involved her getting a criminal record and serving time. Her "out" was breaking the law again by fleeing the country. As if that wasn't bad enough, that psychoid family is bullying anyone who speaks out about this incident. I hope she gets extradited and serves time for both offenses in the US prison system.

Most people like to avoid repercussions for bad behaviour. Who throws themselves at the mercy of the court? Look at the business defence lawyers do. If there's an out, no matter what it is, most people would use it.

True.. But I wish the US government was half as diligent in extraditing her as they would be for a case of piracy.
