Just watched this and got me thinking:

What if I wreck like this guy and no ones around. Is it better to just hide the bike and come pick it up later with a truck to avoid a police report/insurance hassles? Or would it be better to be legal and wait for a cop, file a claim etc.

Let's get it straight: when I'm talking "better" I mean strictly financially. This is JUST A STRICTLY HYPOTHETICAL DISCUSSION.

Cheers

It is possible, if police arrive on scene, for you to be charged with careless driving in such a situation. It's not terribly likely, though. And if that doesn't happen, the only way insurance can be affected is if you file a collision claim. This assumes you even HAVE collision coverage.

If you crash on your own involving no one else, do not call 911 or you will get a bill.

Fleeing may be a good idea too, just in case a witness decides to call 911. I think it happened to someone on the forum.

Aside from that, this particular event would take place only in the states, IMO - "let's ditch the bike (throws in the bushes and takes off)" LOL

I have full coverage - but if I just crash myself - won't I still have to report the damage to the collision centre etc. if the damage is above $500? The collision centre would then notify my Insurance company no?

I think you only go to the collision center if it involves another vehicle. Otherwise believe you can just call your own tow truck and just have it towed. Besides, i don't think your insurance company will know even if you do go to the collision center. I have been told by workers there that i can either do a private deal or go through insurance.

I would hide the bike like in the video, report it stolen, then return at night and light that ***** on fire then count my insurance Benjamins later.

Done.. when I wreck, I'll give you a call to come pick me up and then we'll go ahead with your plan. Bring some gasoline.

You're supposed to report to the police if the damage is over $1000. I wouldn't though, if I could afford to just fix it.

Questions in these threads, still confirm that I live in Canada =) No no, don't get me wrong, it's a good thing. Why would you report it if it was only a single crash ? Even if you hit someone, why not strike a deal if nobody is seriously hurt ?? Being such a law abiding citizen, sometimes only hurts you and nobody else.

I know this girl, who lost control on slippery roads and crashed her car into a pole. Nobody was hurt, not even the poll. Her tow truck driver buddy came to pick her up in no time. No damage to the city property, nobody else is hurt, everybody is happy. Now that I think about it, it's all the insurance companies in Ontario. They instill this fear into the motorists that they are afraid to report anything, I mean ANYTHING because it will affect their insurance.

Fyi, if you're thinking about calling CAA to tow the wreck, know that they're also obligated to call the police if they think the damage is over $1000. I don't know about independent tow trucks but I'd wager most towing companies have similar policies.

Also, comprehensive coverage covers collision if you hit an animal. At least with SF.

I wouldn't be surprised if this happened for real lol (and I know it does).

They don't call the cops, they just refuse to tow until you can prove you have.

In my case he did. Took one look at the bike, said "that's easily way over a grand" and then called OPP.

Whatta ******...guy that came to my car crash said that I need to call the cops before CAA can provide a tow then gave me the wink wink nudge nudge face and left

Yep. In my case, they said I needed a police report before they towed the car.

It was a single vehicle accident but I went through insurance anyways since it was $13000 in damages.

lol I tried to offer him some incentive and gave him a wink-wink-nudge-nudge of my own but he wasn't having any of it. At the end of the day, it worked out surprisingly better for me this way so I'm happy.

Someone wrecked last year. Called CAA and the driver willingly put it on the flatbed and just said if the cops show up before they leave (like say a passing car called the cops) the bike's owner had to deal with it.

As for "hiding" it and coming to pick it up later if I have no way to tow it at the time, sure. I've done it with bicycles before.

Well either the bike is stolen or he doesn't have insurance. If the bike is a write off then I'm reporting it so I can get a new bike. Isn't that the point of an insurance....if your bike is a POS anyways then who cares just buy another POS and don't report it. If "nobody" saw what you did how can you be charge something? Just say a raccoon cross and you tried to avoid it or some bs, who's to say you're lying anyways.

Well if thats the case, posting it on youtube wouldn't be the smartest idea. lol
