After 20+ years of street riding, I'm thinking it's time to take a break.

Being in the east end, I'm close to Ganaraska so that'll be my target destination. I'll also be looking for a quad for my 11 year old son, had hoped riding may be in his future, but he's Autistic with some gross motor skill deficits, so 2 wheels aren't an option, but he did well on a 50cc I bought for him until he outgrew it. So the riding will be mostly just plonking around exploring, no double/triple jumping for my older body to recover from.

I"m 6' around 170lbs, just curious of any feedback on these bikes given my described usage plans. Budget is <$2000 and those are mostly what kijiji is offering up. I figure a year or two down the road I'll pass it along to my wife so she can join us and I can upgrade at that point.
 
XR200 is perfect for plonking around, maybe a smidge tight for 6 footer, but you knew that
 
TTR is a good do everything bike. Rented one in the Dominican Republic. Twice. one time alone. the second time both me and my wife rode double. was still fine.

Great point - the mrs had some choice words for me on an old xl250 (not overly well maintained) that she had to kickstart when she kept stalling it ...

Love my XR200R.....can't kill it. Dead simple to maintain. Always starts. It's a generator with wheels.

Also it's so easy to teach newbs to ride. My 12 yr old neice who had never ridden before was riding alone on it in minutes with only 1 stall. The seat is nice and low, power is enough to run up to 100 kmh ish, yet tame enough not to scare newbs.

That being said, I have a friend who is selling an 86 XR600 for a steal of a deal ($700-800 if I recall) Looks like an almost new bike, runs great. It's taller than a 200, but you aren't a short guy.
 
my wife and i each have ttr230s. we have a blast on them in the trails/vineyards/orchards (we live in niagara on the lake). she has never complained about it being too tall (she can toe both feet), nor has she had issue with the power or weight. initially i had the throttle limiter closed (limiting revs), so she wouldnt easily spook herself, but quickly opened it the rest of the way. it made her feel safer, even if it doest actually prevent problems.
she loves the electric. shes used kick starts, but hates them now.
 
Not being able to kick start a XR200 might be a good litmus test to decide on riding career. Not being able to climb out from underneath it would be distant second.
 
Found an awesome 125 Honda quad for my son - being delivered tomorrow. Runs mint - great seller - great $ deal. That leaves me a bit of breathing room in the budget for my bike - thinking crf230 now.
