bike dies when i put it into 1st gear

today, i started my bike. (in this cold weather, yes)
it was running. I put it into 1st gear and the engine stops.

I checked the kick stand switch, and there is nothing stuck. All moving parts seem to be moving.

what could be the problem?
 
will it start in first?

if not, then something is wrong with your kickstand switch. Cold weather could have something to do with the switch not working properly.
 
Is it stalling as if it is being shut down electrically by the ignition switch, or is it stalling with a great big lurch forward?

It's not unusual for clutch plates to seize together when they are clamped together for a long time (e.g. during storage).

Definitely no lurch forward.
Feels like I kill switched it. But I didnt .
All I did was pulled the clutch and stepped on the gear shifter.

Actually I didn't even let the clutch out yet and the engine dies.
 
bypass the kickstand switch if ok, then bypass the clutch switch, is the neutal light on ?
 
Used to happen on my DRZ400 when bike was not fully warmed up. It would never happen when fully warmed up. The bike was carburetted, and I always wondered why it used to do that. Kickstand switch was definitely ruled out, I never found out what was the root cause. It never happened often enough to bother me as most of the time by the time I put helmet on and other things it used to get past the stubborn point ....
 
Use to happen to my ex500 to combat this problem, I increased the idle knob to around 4k after that it would get into 1st gear without the engine stalling. I think it was partly due to sitting for a long time/ cold. What bike do you ride?
 
i heard that fuel stabilizers (assuming you put some into the tank), can make cold starts harder, and some times stalls the bike right after start up before its warmed up.

i am riding a klx250s
 
If it isn't the switch, the wires are exposed and shorting out.
Or there is something wrong that makes the motor rpm die down enough to make the engine stall with the small amount of drag put on it by the clutch.
