How do you get the black goey stuff from lube off things?

Like the others said.Kerosene first, then brake cleaner if the kerosene doesn't work.

I'm lazy and cheap. My bike gets filthy and I hate spending a lot of time cleaning it. I found a few awesome products that clean a bike very easily. BEst of all they don't hurt aluminum.

1. Kerosene in a WD40 spray bottle. Chepper spray bottles might work but they might fail. The WD40 spray bottle is made for kerosene. Mineral spirits are another option. Should be better than kerosene(more volatile). I will give it a shot when I run out of kerosene.
2. Zep citrus degreaser from home depot diluted 2to1 in a spray bottle. Super cheap and better than simple green. Simple green is actually bad for aluminum.
3. 3M scotchbrite NON scratch pads.
4. Ikea PLASTIS Dish-washing brush. Stiffer than paint brushes but not too stiff to scratch stuff. Nice shape.

Spray with kerosene, wait a few seconds then clean off with zepp. Use the scotchbrite pad on stubborn places.

If those don't do it, bust out the angle grinder :)
