Went for my first ride last night

Hey folks,

I've been meaning to create this thread for a while now. I've been a member for 4 years, had my license for 3. I recently bought a Ninja 650R. I finally got all my gear yesterday - so late last night I went for my first ride. I'll admit that I probably should have bought a 250R. It would have been an safer bike to get started on. Anyone who tells you a 650R can be a decent starter bike is full of chit. Really, you can start on any bike but whether or not is the safest option is always up for debate. But I digress...

In any case, I took it to a parking lot and I rode around for a bit and practiced emergency braking and slow maneuvers. Once I felt comfortable on the bike I decided to go for a short ride on Leslie street. It was a lot of fun. I went through a couple of gears, I heard the engine roar... I looked down at the speedometer and it said 59km/h.... :lmao: Grandmas in their corollas were passing me on their way to knitting club.

Geez does that thing ever look like an SV650.
Congrats on the first ride. Stay safe :)

I had the same sensation when I started riding. Thought I was hauling *** and looked at the speedo 60km/h. To this day I find that I ride slower than I drive.

I think I'm going to be the same type of rider. Going 60km/h was scary enough. I can't imagine what 80km/h and 100km/h would feel like.

You'll get used to higher speeds as you ride. Now I find my natural speed limiting on the bike or in the car are both affected more by my surroundings. In the city I self limit at 10-20km/h above the limit (60-80km/h), out in the country or on highways its 10 over (80-110). That's without looking at the speedo. In the car it's a little higher.

I felt the same way when I started. 60 km/h felt so fast, and it seemed like every single car on the road was blowing past me. I'd always be riding like 10 under the limit.
Nowadays I'm usually going the limit or 10-15 above, hardly have cars passing me now.

Congratulations on your first ride... I wonder what 180 kph feels like??

Lol i remember when taking hte msf course, the first time they had us riding in a large oval doing only around 25km i felt like wooooohooooo we're flying! lol. I remember the instructor telling us to speed up because the minimum we would be riding on the streets on avearge would be at least 40, and i was thinking holy *****! Then the first time i took my own bike out and was doing over 60 i was like wow. But within a week i was on the highway doing 120+ on a trip to the falls, without even practicing once at highway speed. Baptism by fire, but it worked out ok. Now every time i leave my driveway i have to be careful to watch the speedo to make sure i'm not going too far over 60, which feels like a snails pace. You'll get used to the speed quickly.

OMG I just ventured out to the big roads 2 days ago and yes I feel exactly the same way. Now my max is 70km/h and I dont wanna go any faster than that on local roads. I was thinking there's no way for me to go any faster than this to the highway speed...

You guys will get used to highway speeds pretty fast. don't worry about it.

OP, congrats on ur purchase. It's a sexy looking bike! By the way you are funny... and ya I noticed as well that lots of cars passed me by. But I try to encourage myself by thinking: it's not me that being slow; it's those cars that are speeding lol!

lol, 40 feels like 100 km/h when I rode in Vietnam. I've rode the last 3 years without a speedo just go with the flow of traffic. Don't worry to much about your speed unless you're speeding.

We were all in the same boat. The first time I did 280 I thought I was flying.
