Went for my first ride last night

Congrats on the new bike OP, it looks really nice!

Let's not forget that going from 40kph to 0kph, will show you how fast 40kph really feels like. So it's good to have a little fear when you're learning, in order to avoid any unfortunate accidents. IMHO you sound like you've chosen the right bike for yourself and your being cautious. Soon enough you will be going faster and become more confident as most of us do.

Have fun and ride safe!

This is my second season and I've clocked around 15,000kms (8ish from the first season) and I can explain to you why the 400s, 500s, and 650s are considered great starter bikes. Believe it not, aside from the CBR125, the acceleration (0-100) and 1/4 timings between the 3 class of bikes are not significantly huge. The reason why they are great starter bikes is because it is EXTREMELY difficult to get knocked off the bike from two huge n00b mistakes:

1. Popping the clutch (aka, wheelie, I have never managed to come close to popping one on my GS).
2. Early downshift (aka, engine brake to high side? or is it low side?).

#2 is probably the most dangerous one. I've felt my rear wheel fishtail once or twice from being retarded and shifting down at 9k RPM. Do this on a real sport bike or something larger and massive bad **** will likely happen.

You'll get over the speed thing in a few weeks. One of the first things youll notice is how fast 80km/h really is <_< lol Have fun!

#1 - Yeah, I've popped it once already, I'm happy it didn't flip me over.
#2 - It would be a highside, the rear would lock, and then when it unlocks it spits you over the bars.

The 650R is starting to become more friendly to me. I know how to treat the throttle right. I said it wasn't a good starter bike before because I started on a Suzuki Marauder 250. Pinning the throttle on that thing did nothing scary. A slight twitch on the 650R and my body is being pushed back.

it feels amazing...

I went on the 404 last night. I got up to 120km/h it was so scary(maybe faster, but that was by accident). I can't imagine what would happen if I had to emergency stop going that speed. Its something I want to make sure I can do.

Enjoy the moment where 120 is pretty scary. I really miss that! Now 120 bores me to death. I ride backwads now on 400 series for excitement. Hahahha im really jealous, really really jealous.

It scares me how the bike is able to get up to 120km/h and still have a lot left.

Try scary when your bike can do 120 in first or second gear easily!

I just rode back from Niagara early this morning. Try going highway speeds in high winds on the Burlington Skyway while the roads are still damp.

I was in full tuck position to be more aerodynamic and I don't care what anyone was thinking. It was friggen windy.

LOL, I remember tthe first time I hit the highway was when my gf at the time told me to drop by and she lived in woodbridge and me in Mississauga. I jumped on 427 than 401 and up 400 and I was pretty much crapping my pants. I got there and my heart is beating at like 170 bpm ready to jump out of my chest. She asks me; "How was the ride?!" and I was all like; "It was alright baby, pretty chill"
LOL

Now if it wasn't for speed limits my average speed on the highway would be in the 150's lol

Yeah, its also really easy to hit those high speeds on the bike. The thing can really take off in 4th and 5th gear.

lol! Love is so powerfull...

I went up to 90-100 today for a very short period and it felt great... I definitely start to feel the wind everytime I go 80+ cuz my bike is a 250 and I'm light too. Not sure how it's gonna feel on highway...

btw, I so appreciate how fast motorcycles accelerate... You are probably the first one out every time the light is on, unless some stupid high end sport car tries to race you...

Try Eastport Drive underneath the Skyway in those conditions. It adds 1 minute to you time. But a couple of nice curves underneath from one side to the other. Much nicer than the bridge itself.

Get used to wind unless it's really wild. Motorcycles are very stable due to the gyroscopic forces.
I'm not fond of wind but new riders in particular need that kind of practice as much as any other.
If you get caught in a gusty storm front you do need to know how to deal with it safely.
Pressure waves off of trucks can be very severe and some wind skills help there as well as general turbulence handing on the 400 series.
If you are legal on the 400 series - try and take the wind in stride.

Yes Eastport is and option and I've done the same when there was a traffic jam on the skyway but the steel bridge can give riders pause as well.....can we say squirmy ;)

Nice bike, I always liked the look of the 650R. I just wish they made a 1000cc+ model.

I almost bought this when I was looking for a new bike.

I've got my heart set on one.. but in reality my 650r is plenty of power.. I don't need it, I just want it, and as such my money has better places to be at the moment.

I rode back from the GFs this afternoon. While on Willowdale ave, a tiny little hatchback drifted into my lane. I had the foresight to see it coming so I went off the throttle and applied the brakes. She did a shoulder check as her right side wheels were already in my lane. She stayed in the lane and didn't look at me when we got to the red light.

Ride safe everyone!
