Recording video - Anyone using a P&S?

Wondering if anyone out there who records video on their rides uses a point and shoot rather than something like the GoPro or Contour? For their price, their video quality is lacking, especially what I've seen from the Contour. I've been looking at ruggedized cameras that still have a relatively small form factor like the Nikon AW100, and pairing it with a RAM mount and maybe some kind of antivibration stage.

Anyone done something like this? Anyone have video to share?

LoL you didn't signal pulling out of your parking spot. I looked at the lady like she had two heads when i got dinged for that on my G2.

My test technically didn't start until i got in front of them. Your test started the moment she got in the car.

I recall seeing on YouTube a rider who used a P&S camera INSIDE HIS HELMET!
He cut a notch in the foam directly in front of his mouth and wedged the small P&S camera into that slot. It held perfectly and recorded his voice extremely well with visor down.

There are a lot of vloggers on youtube that do that. Just place a standard P&S camera right inside the helmet under their nose.

One that i used to follow is mordeth13.

All my track video was done with a P&S before this year.

They are the ones with the top right corner obstructed. I mounted it on a counterbalanced swingarm that pivoted on a hollow 3" rubber 'bumper'.

The capacitor for the flash broke loose, and the thread for the mount stripped (it was plastic). The sensor died last year but I still got 2 years track duty out of it.

The advantage of a GoPro or a DriftHD is that it's waterproof, dust proof and somewhat impact proof. They also have wide angle lens to catch more of the road and eliminate most of the shakes. The advantage of the DriftHD is the rotatable lens so you can put it pretty much anywhere on the bike.

Also, how long does the battery in a P&S last when you are continuously recording? Can you turn off the "live view" while recording?

The AW100 is ruggedized as well, and it definitely has better underwater shooting capabilities without the extra $50 case for the Hero2. It does fall short in the maximum depth category (the AW100 I mean), but I'm not a diver.

Good questions about the battery that I'm not sure of. If the screen could be turned off during recording it would definitely help that.

Also, when I was comparing quality I was looking at the Hero, not the Hero2 which seems to be significantly better, but it's still pretty much limited to wide angle as its narrow FOV is incredibly bad, the picture seems to be an enlarged digital crop or something as the picture is extremely noisy

197' is not deep enough for you? (BTW the AW100 is only 33 feet)

Also, like I said above... the wide angle is a big plus for a camera on your bike...

Hero2 is noisy?

You misunderstood some of that post

The AW100 doesn't compare to the Hero2 depth-wise, as you said, the AW100 is 33 feet vs 197. So what I was saying is the Hero2 has the advantage, albeit one I don't really care about

I also tried to make it clear that I meant video noise, not audio noise. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS1-zsWy47U it shows that at 90º FOV, it's absolute crap. So if you don't want all your videos to be in wide angle distortion land, you're out of luck. (Watch it at 1080p, you'll see it)

I agree the 170 deg is too much on the GoPro, and it's very obvious that quality is lost when choosing the narrower FOV if you try shooting in low light. Have a look at the Replay XD for a more sensible FOV and good quality audio and video and controls. Still more than a P&S though, but you save in the long run if you use it in harsh environments.
