Socket set on sale at Canadian Tire

Ah thanks man, I totally forgot about the torque wrenches that are on sale and I'll need it next week.

Watch for when their bigger sets go on sale, I got mine for like 60% off and saved a couple hundred and I haven't needed another wrench or socket set since.

are the sockets thin walled?

I bought this exact set couple years ago on sale for similar price. It has served me well but if you're planning to do any auto work I'd suggest going with the larger set that includes a 1/2" drive.

+1, wait until their big sets go on sale, it happens pretty regularly, and then you will not need to spend more money in the long run just piecing together kits.
This is the kit I have: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...aft+419-piece+Socket+&+Tool+Set.jsp?locale=en
I have not needed any other tools, and I work on trucks, cars, bikes, sleds and a million other things that pop up either with friends or on the farm.
I honestly don't think I paid more than $300 for it, but I bought it like 5 years ago. It's been sitting in a trailer that gets wet inside sort of often and there is no rust on them.

The only times I've needed to buy other tools are for "special" projects or the odd bike specific tool like a chain rivet tool.

Save the pennies, get something decent, buy it once and you'll always have it and never need tools again.

The good thing about the kit I have, is I bought a 6 drawer tool box at the same time, and trimmed up the trays that come in the tool set and they slid in to my drawers in my tool chest, and my tool chest is the most organized one I have seen, I know where all the tools are, easy to find and when I clean up after a job I can easily see if I've missed something.

One drawback to the big sets is that half the sockets are SAE and never get used unless you own a Harley.

Buy a hammer at the same time as the socket set. They'll fit fine.

They work fine on cars, lawn mowers, and pretty much everything other than motorcycles... unless you have an HD, as mentioned.

Mastercraft cases really suck though, since all the tools tend not to stay in their slots. Everytime i take out my set and open the case, the tools are all over the place, especially the sockets. Tools themselves are pretty good, had it for about 7 years without any problems.

Can't comment on the Stanley though, but I think it's better quality than Crappy Tire's Mastercraft. Also, never ever buy Mastercraft's air impact wrench as they are garbage, even the better one of the two they offer.

My Maximum set is the opposite - I am having hard time pulling out the sockets, every single time :(

My dad has a set like this, I like it because its small enough to keep in your car.

I got 177 pieces one - regular 349, on sale for 129.
If u decide to get it - make sure it scans 129 at the cashier. Mine scanned at 149 and I did not realize till I got to the car. Had to go back and got 22 bucks back on the card.

this set goes on sale for around 150$ often. And to loosely quote a classic movie "If you can't find the tool you need in THIS set, you have no business being in a garage"

Oh boy, are you wrong or what... There are so many specialized tools out there, it's just amazing! You use the tool/socket set as your base set, but you'll always need the weirdest tools in the world the moment you are going to touch your car/bike.

Well I went to pick up this set today;

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/Sockets/SocketSets/PRDOVR~0582011P/Mastercraft+Maximum+174-Piece+Universal+Socket+Set.jsp?locale=en#product_aa

I left it on the shelf. The description online states "Sockets have a universal opening that works on 6 different types of fasteners" which had me scratching my head. The picture in the above link clearly shows that they are 6-sided sockets with anti-rounding corners (click to zoom in). Upon inspection at the store I found that they are actually like the picture below;

00924959000

and I'm not touching those; they're a stripped nut waiting to happen.

So now I'm looking at 2 sets, both on for $150;

I'm leaning towards the Stanley set as the MC one has a lot of duplicity in itself and with tools I have that I'd be keeping, but I'm not sure which is the better set for the price.

I was hoping to keep the price down to $99 so I could sneak an on sale wrench set in too... although I found that was a typo too in that it's a 30 piece set where it's advertised as a 32 piece set.
