Hey, just put a deposit on a new non-current 2010 R1 black.

I've read a bit about it and watched a few vids and love the sound of the crossplane motor. I'm a fan of mid-range punch and I'm hoping this bike has it.

Looking for feedback from anyone who owns one..

As in usual Yamaha fashion, there's a pronounced dip in power where you want a good midrange punch. Otherwise it seems about on par with the other bikes, save for the Fireblade which has gobs of usable midrange.

All that matters it that you're excited about the bike. I agree on the sound of the crossplane motors, it's awesome. I also really like the R1 styling.

Get ready to have a super roasted arse, those things are hot! Nice bike to ride though.

The dip can be addressed through exhaust and tuning. According to my friends that own the cross plane bikes, the factory left a lot on the table that can be unlocked through ecu mods.

Yes, expect to get cooked.. but decatting the pipe helps alot.

I read about the underseat heat....I also read that installing a y-pipe and some after market cans helps.

This is my 1st underseat exhaust bike..not sure how much I like the style...I'll give it time, it'll grow on me I'm sure.

Don't. You thnk it's too late for feedback? I don't understand why you will buy a product and ask for an opinion

You can also get the exhaust ceramic coated to help reduce the heat radiation. I hear it's better to do the inside of the pipes so that they don't suffer from exposure to the excess heat that woud be retained in the metal, like you would get if you coated only the outside.

I spoke to a few owners who had their passenger's legs burned.
The 1,000's have so much motor so for me I ask why buy a bike that burns you and you have to spend 100's of $'s just to make it enjoyable? Then money on an ECU....? I prefer to use the $ for gas, tires and lots of riding.

To each their own so I hope you find you really enjoy it. Ya never know until you try!

Oops. Double post.
Dang Blackberry. Never own a BB again!
Ya never know until ya try! Lol.

Thanks for the feedback..
I've read bike reviews from different web sites but yea just wanted some feedback from the real world about how guys are living with it day to day thats all.
I was sold on the bike few yrs back with they started making the crossplane motor. Handling and midrange are important to me..kinda why I like big bore bikes.
I've ridden a 06 but not a crossplane..kinda pumped right now honestly.
10ft/tq more then the 9R should be fun.

Possibly more of an issue with mild steel headers than with stainless, not sure what the R1 has though... But yes, ceramic coating helps a great deal...

There are shorty style pipes that eliminate the whole underseat setup. They sound awesome too.

I priced out a set of Yosh slip on's (aluminum) and it comes with the Y-pipe (according to the parts guy). It came to $850 + tax.
Carbon cans are approx $1200...
I love the sound of the crossplane and I'm hoping with the yosh cans it wont be as hot

I had a pair of Devil carbon cans on a 10R, sounded awesome and were well put together.
