Any fjr 1300 owners here? Opinions please as I'm leaning to one as my next ride.

Loving it. As for heat and weight remember I'm coming off an old 81 cb750f so heat noise and whatever prob not even close to my current ride. The size and weight also does not bother me at all as I'm over 6 foot tall and around 260lbs. I'd actually prefer the size of the bike. I loved the old fj's but all I have ever owned are 80's bikes and I wanted something more recent for once. Are the first Gen fjr's really that bad to try to avoid? These are the ones in my price range. It does really seem like the bike for me.

I wanted a FJR1300 but ended up on an ST1300 because of the heat... both bikes are warm bikes for sure and you will feel it on a hot day, however on my demo ride after 20 minutes on a 30c day ? i was ready to hand the keys back on the FJR but the ST was 'ok' not great but 'ok' ...

The FJR1300 has been quite popular with Iron Butt riders, so that should tell you something about its capacity as a touring bike.

+1 on the current generation Concours. Comfy and extremely powerful. Bit of a porker, but handles well for its size. I rode the VFR1200 for a day, and it didn't sit well with me. It's really more of a big sport bike. And the motor is REALLY thirsty.

The early FJR's put a lot of engine heat onto the rider. Other than that they're supposed to be amazing!

Hey all,

I owned two FJRs in the past few years - great bikes! Lots of power, good handling, decent ergonomics, great fuel economy. I traded my 2006 FJR in for a 2008 Kawasaki Concours 14 - also a very worthy bike! I wrote a fairly lengthy comparison thread here (and on an FJR forum and a Concours 14 forum) a few years ago.... wonder if those comparisons are still around? To sum it up in a nutshell, I would characterize the FJR and the C-14 as Sport-Touring, whereas the ST 1300 would be more Touring-Sport. All are excellent bikes but the FJR and the C-14 definitely accelerate faster than the ST 1300. The FJR seems like the sportiest of the bunch, closely followed by the C-14 then more distantly followed by the ST 1300. (I have never actually owned a ST1300, and my riding impressions of it are based on about 2 hours of riding experience.) I did find the wind protection was better on the C-14 though. Aftermarket windscreens are a must.... even the taller OEM screens are a big improvement over the stock small screens. Rear vision through the mirrors is poor on the later model FJRs and the C-14 though (but you learn to live with it.) .... the earlier model FJRs (2004-2005) can use the wider FZ1 mirrors which are a big improvement.

A few people have mentioned heat issues.... you have to expect that with a huge powerful engine tucked between your legs. These engines put out a bit of heat but I never found it to be a problem - even in 30C - 35C weather. (actually can be quite welcome in Canada in the fall.)

Fuel economy is similar on the FJR and the C-14 - on a recent 3500 km trip with the C-14, I averaged 5L/100km... quite respectable!

If you have any specific questions, send me a PM.

I have 2 riding buddies with FJR's and it's a great bike. If you're have $7,000 to spend you're probably looking at a 2003 or 2004. Shop around and get one with low mileage and accessories. Fall is the perfect time to buy. A US source bike would be at least $2k cheaper. One of the guys I know paid $12k US for a 2010 FJR with 100km on it.

You don't really have to go to the US to get a decent deal. A couple of months ago, GP bikes had a 2010 Concours 14 with about 10,000 km on it for $12,500. Not a bad deal. After having owned both bikes, I dont think there is an overwhelming difference between them except the C-14 may have better ergonomics for taller riders. Also the C-14 seems easier to attach aftermarket stuff onto, such as Givi trunks and the like... a little more touring friendly than the FJR.

Thanks for your opinions EVERYONE. I think the fj is the way I'm going to go. From what I read it would seem the biggest warning seem to be The heat factor. However there is no way ths heat could be half as bad as my current ride. After all I am coming off an 80's air cooled bike. I am looking forward to the "hunt" for the perfect used model now as I'm in no rush and got time to find that sweet deal. Hopefully this time next year ill be posting as a happy fjr1300 owner. Enjoy the rest of the season as im done due to my insurance has run out on my current bike and its restoration begins *gulp*. Once again thank you!
