im not so sure about that, i have for years parked on the sidewalk near the bicycles at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket. never had a problem but a gentleman came up to me noticing i was carrying a helmet, and informed me that there was a secruity guard looking to be writing a ticket on my bike. i ran out side and asked why i was getting a ticket and he explained that its still considered a vehicle and cannot park in pedestrian areas. luckly he let me move my bike to a parking spot before issuing me the ticket.
The only place i had this exact same thing happen to me in "Toronto" again ... York Uni!
"Newmarket is a different story it's not a heavily populated city like Toronto, where bikes are the norm"...maybe thats why you had your situation.
I don't know why York is classified as a university. Toronto, UBC and McGill are in the top 3 of Canadian universities and all make special accommodation for green initiatives like anything on 2 wheels. Of the top 500 ranked universities in the world Toronto ranks 19th and the other two are not far behind; I tried to find the ranking for York and it is not even in the top 250 if it is on the list at all (could not find it).
York should be classified as a parking authority with Nazi leanings and the history speaks for itself. In 1974 I dated a girl at York and if I stopped at the curb ran inside to fetch her, 5 minutes later I had a ticket. Its like it fell from the sky, I didn't see anyone. I swear their parking authority officers would better be deployed in a SWAT team. This was so unlike UofT where I could stop at the curb (in those days) in the heart of the campus on King's College Circle, run inside and for up to about 15 minutes it was okay. I always felt that UofT concentrated more on education hence no surprise they place so high in the world.
Fast forward to 7 years ago and my son was having the same problems. Told it was okay to park at Seneca@York by the bike racks then being awarded a $100 ticket. Student action to get a small area (say 10 parking spaces set aside for accommodation for 30 or 40 bikes) was a no go. Eventually students became so inflamed they just take a ticket stub from the machine, take up a whole parking spot then exit across the grass. And that's what happens when something is so unreasonable. And that is one way on how York helps student education.
No one advocates anarchy; law & order is necessary everywhere, however there is no excuse for not providing green initiatives in this enlightened age and taking example for many other universities. York lacks vision and there is no one running public relations in this regard. Is this really the kind of image York insists it should maintain these last 40 years?
If parking is really allowed now under the bridge, an official statement or sign post should make this plain to everyone.
When i read your post, i was entralled by it and smiling, because you hammered the probalem, and im so shocked this has been going on since 1974 lol
i love it how you mentioned the tickets falling from the sky, great giggle, but it is true, they watch you from their cameras, and see you leave your car or bike and boom get in their golf carts and give you a ticket in a swift moment you come back and you want to kill someone now... trust me if i could get out of York i would! i only went there because it was the closest Uni to me, but i know would have rather gone to U of T or EVEN Ryerson!!!! < because thats how crappy i feel Yorks education has become, im not saying its easy, it's hard as hell, but the reasons why its hard is because their standards are crap now, both for who they hire to teach students, TA's, administratice procedures, parking, everything sucks! if it wasn;t for the great friends i made i would have dropped out long time ago!
My cousin and i regret ever going to York, because trust us we feel your sons pain, just trying to reach class on time because the MAJOR hassle of parking or headaches of tickets, both our grades dropped simply because it was a nightmare just to get there and park, York never made us feel like it was an education institution, damn strikes, bomb threats during exams, book prices going from 80-90 to 156 to 200 each on average in 3 years, don't even get us started on the fees, and your grades might as well fall from the sky like the tickets that they put on our bikes and cars because York finds failed and rejected PHD holders who are in a place where they could give a F about the students.
my cousins friends is Jewish and lives in York village, and this guy is one of the 13 bloodlines, if you know what im talking about, this friend said there is a jewish secret society at York and only for those in the elite bloodline, so you can see why York is so F'ed up! it's like the "federal Reserve Bank" situation.
York Uni it not a University, it's a city that is being built by a few elites, that is why you are seeing, their malls, coffee shops, sub way stations, now getting their own cop like cars, security etc.
we also got fed up with bs tickets, that we started using our supermotos full potential in good use if you know what i mean.lol .... they create more problems trying to fix an easy small one, because they don't really want to fix a problem that is free!
Its not allowed, it was never allowed. But as some people have said, its probably because its Seneca Property that they dont touch it. But when i asked the parking office, they said it wasn't allowed and gave me attitude when i told them that i do it all the time.
yes it's because it's not Yorks property, try to take something and be grateful, don't go to the same place (seneca) that lets you park for free "even if they don't have to" and piss them off! by being a smart ***! this is how things usually get f-ed up for everyone.
