Yamaha R6 help

While it makes me sad that sportbikes cost so much for younger folks to run, I don't see why we should try and talk a guy out of a bike he clearly lusts after. Not many of us are on NC700's, so everyone draws their 'practical' line somewhere different. The R6 is one of the truly iconic bikes for a reason. If you really want a supersport, and are going in knowing the risks and costs, why not?

He's followed the rules of grouchy motorcycle forums and has ridden something a bit sedate for a few years, and is clearly willing to pay for the privilege. Fair play and good luck. I rode a ZX-10R for years, 95% on the street, and loved it. I even did shorter 4-5 day tours on it, which weren't much fun on the superslab, but it paid off in spades when arriving at the twisties. My biggest problem was fiddling with the soft luggage, to be honest.

As for the question at hand, everyone has already answered, but I'll repeat: start with a few brokers who specialise in bike stuff, like Mitchell & Whale and NFP. Once you have their best quotes as a baseline, then work your way through the rest of the non-broker lines, particularly if you have home and car insurance you can combine. I would expect you'll get your best rate from a broker, but it doesn't hurt to try everyone. I know that's not very earth shattering, but there's no secret sauce in this messed up province...

(To the OP if you do end up with a sportbike, here's my tut-tutting old fart bit: Be smart and considerate about where you speed, wear good gear (all leather and a CE2 back protector), know your roads, and learn The Pace. Ride with people better than you if you can, but never, ever with folks who give you grief if you can't keep up. Oh, and do a trackday sooner than later, even if you're worried about possibly being a bit slow. Even better, do a track school like FAST, Racer 5, Super Sonic or Pro 6. The cost is minimal compared to what you'll be paying in insurance anyway, and it'll help you get the most out of your bike...)
Thanks for the advice
i think your best bet is just to call everyone and record the rates you get. youre 25 now im assuming with your full license and hopefully a clean record. rates drop off first at 21, then next at 25. you also have 3 prior years i think theres got to be some options out there for around 2.5-3 grand. but call everyone, TD gave me astronomical quotes but the other guy next door gave me half that, call every company you can even if it takes you a few weeks to do so. goodluck man!
Thanks for the advice man im gonna start looking today hopefully you're right.

how about keeping the cbr 500 for the street and the R6 for the track? The insurance money will be better spent on whole summer of track time and professional instructions/school. At the end of summer you will a lot better rider. Only one caveat.....new R6 for the track!

Thanks to everyone for all the info, keeping the 500 may be the smart choice but im so bored of it after 3 years I need to get something bigger.
I'm dead set on the R6 and have been since i was a kid.
Even if I get robbed for a few years, I have my M, and did m1 exit and M rider training. Im also moving up to Innisfil in a couple weeks so that should help a great deal as well, hopefully I'll see some of you guys around this season. Best wishes and be safe out there, already had a close call with a minivan turning infront of me lol.

That is the smartest choice for sure, can't argue that but it just doesn't do it for me, I work 6 days a week and sometimes all weekend, track time isn't to much of an option right now. Would love to go for a trackday if I can make some time though.

Upgrade your tires! I'm pretty sure you can fit way better tires on that bike.

I know it's not the same thing at all but for insurance reasons I really recommend getting a first gen FZ6 for a few years. I4 R6 derived motor with tuning for more mid range and less top end. Thing still has 98hp and wayyyyy cheaper on insurance. Doesn't have the top end of a R6 as I said, and it weighs more, but still fast as hell compared to a 500. My insurance this year is $40 a month but I'm bit older than you (not much).

Heart wants what the heart wants. He’s prepared to blow $1000/month to get there. He says ‘bored’ of the 500 but really he just wants the R6. He will end up not using more of what the bike can offer then the difference gained from upgrading from the 500. But that’s not a factor.

With that level of determination nothing we can say to him but good luck.

Also, my Grom has more low end then the R6. ?

I'll probably get Diablo rossi's on the R6
Just be aware that Pirelli's branding on the Diablo Rosso line can be a bit confusing. They're up to Diablo Rosso IV on the street line, but there's also a Diablo Rosso Corsa II, which has full carbon black shoulders for track use. Despite being a lower number, the Corsa's are a stickier tire and incredible for track days. I run them on my Tuono, and absolutely love them because they also work for dry and warm street riding at less than 10/10ths. If you don't plan to track often, the regular Rossos are probably a better bet...

Thanks for the info, ill have to keep that in mind.

So update ive gotten two quotes and a bunch of non quotes, $9400 yearly through TD and $6500 yearly from M&W, honestly couldnt be happier to pay $6500 a year for my dream bike.

Try out Desjardins, they have had the best rates on my last three bikes (Ducati, HD, Honda). Unfortunately most insurers want to see 6 years on a bike before insuring supersports.

If you are dead set on the R6 all the power to you, if you are looking at other options I would recommend looking into the CBR650R and the RS660. You are still getting around 100hp but they aren’t designated supersports but on the street there isn’t much my 650 can’t do that an R6 can. Track, different story. Going naked can also save you a bunch, the MT09 is a blast to ride if your ok not having any wind protection.

Jiminy christmas. I have to say, I admire your determination, even if it's not how I'd do it. Glad to see some folks keeping sportbikes going on the street. There's so few these days I have to wonder how the actuaries collect enough data to determine if they actually are so dangerous or whether it's simply a small, captive market ripe for exploitation...

I completely agree man, most of the supersports you see these days have fake plates and ride like hooligans, we all like to go fast once in a while obviously, but I think that people that go legit are actually for the most part smart, and safe riders.

I love sportbikes and I couldn't imagine a world without them. We can only hope for changes, and unfortunately we live in the worst place in the world for insurance costs (and phone bills but thats a whole different rant).

Still gotta give them a call, closed now so ill have to call Monday. I've riden the 650r as well as a GXSR-600 and It just isn't for me, the Aprilia is a really nice bike but isn't what I'm looking for only want the R6, maybe R1 and maybe GSXR-750 but tbh heart is set on the R6.

In my neck of the woods, it's all cruisers, tourers and ADV bikes. I'd guess at most one in 30 that I see are sportbikes. Maybe it's different northeast of Toronto, but not Hamilton to Niagara. I occasionally hear a 600 ripping up the escarpment in summer, but rarely see them. I do avoid group rides and bike meets like the plague, though, so maybe that's where they congregate these days?
