WTF accidents in the GTA this week?

Age limits are fine. I was driving long before I turned 16. By the time I finally got my license, I was already more capable than most drivers out there, I just had to get used to traffic.

I think the initial testing needs to be hard. I mean an actual challenge. If you're not capable of putting your tires within a couple inches at speed, you don't deserve to pass. If you're it capable of throwing a vehicle around on a skid pad, no license. If you're not capable of making instant decisions on the proper actions to avoid a situation at 100km/hr you do not pass.
By the time I was on the road, I had better knowledge of how to control fwd, rwd, 4x4, automatic and standard vehicles better than most because I grew up playing around on the farm/back roads with them... What seemed like nonsense and immaturity actually made me a skilled driver. And I think people need to experience this type of driving. It will also show them how fast things can happen.

The attitude of people on the road is also a huge issue. That is what cops need to be targeting. Courtesy goes far. If people would start being courteous, then people wouldn't need to tailgate to prevent others from cutting them off and killing their reaction distance. Give people space and we will all get there faster and safer.

We need a strict skill test every time you renew your license. And penalties need to be stricter for certain offences. Those with a bad record need to be off the road. I'm ticket free and I speed all the time, and drive a lot.

I had my brandnew truck rear ended 2 months ago due to people stopping in the left lane to do paperwork after a small collision. If I hadnt paid attention to the truck behind me, the damage would have been worse.

I'll echo the previous posts on the need for higher standards. It's ridiculous how straight roads are in Ontario yet people still manage to cause collisions.

driving is an educated risk, going to a bar is an educated risk, eating poorly and so on. when you submit a resume its you against everyone else. when i first moved here from niagara 20yrs ago the 401 was a much different experience from qew. nothing has changed. driving is like frogger. play the game get your license. its should be that easy.

stupid people take freedoms away from the rest

This is the problem, the person who abruptly shifted lanes is the one who caused the accident yet the driver following will hit the slow vehicle if they are not paying attention and will get the at fault declaration. Years ago I had this happen to me. The roads were wet from rain and the truck in front of me abruptly shifted lanes to avoid a mattress that fell unto the road. I didn't have time to brake so I flew off the road and down into a ditch. My car was toast from this. Riding or driving needs attention. Having a lapse of attention will happen. Cross your fingers it will not be at a critical moment.

GTA drivers never leave the correct amount of following distance, and not to be an arse or anything but if the roads are wet you have to double if not triple the gap with the guy in front and the gap has to be big enough to be able to avoid such things as a mattress on the road

I hated taking my drive tests because of how slow you have to drive, even when everyone is whipping around you doing 20 or more over the limit.. I hate the feeling of slowing up traffic and the tests are agony because you don't want to **** up but are also feel like you're putting you and the tester in danger. Maybe its just me lol

"please change into the lane to your left"

"You mean the lane that other guy just blew by me in? but I'm doing 100 flat and the cars less than a hundred meters behind are doing 120-130 and closing fast.. ill wait until its safe"

Later on..

"you lost point because you hesitated and waited too long to change lanes"

Nice info from everyone. Just remember, you can't fix stupid. Unfortunately, they (the stupid) are also making the laws.

I don't mean to seem like a *********, but the only people I feel sorry for in the OP's accident links are the immigrant couple who were trying to fix their car, I mean that’s not the safest thing to do what they did but being immigrants they probably didn't realize how many dumb drivers Canada has, and they died for their mistake, that is really awful.

The reason I have no more remorse for the rest or "drivers" is because myself, I’ve been in many accidents in Canada and nowhere else and everytime it was a drivers fault, and it’s getting worse every year, eventhough im getting more experienced and becoming a better rider every year, I even took some professional courses last few summers. This year alone I’ve almost had three close calls, each time young drivers from the age range 18-25 either pull right in front of me at the last minute or cut me off from east to west when im heading south or north bound, you might say it’s either a good thing or bad thing but the only good that’s come out of this constant close call accidents for me is, I’ve become really good at predicting and saving my butt and not freezing in the moment and that’s kept me alive so far I think and because of God’s grace I hope. Sometimes im surprised at how I escape so many accidents, while most people die for less.

last two times I crashed into the car when I got cut off about 2 car lengths in front of me, I had pretty much managed to drop my speed from 50kmh to about 10kmh just in time, and each time I never got a scratch on me I don't know how eventhough I landed on the other cars hood, but I’ve had to fix my bike 3 times already this year, thank God I switched to a Supermoto, otherwise I’d be on my 3rd sport bike this year already.

This made me realize that in fact insurance companies are SPOT ON for quoting people under 25 high motorcycle insurance rates because they are 90% likely to die, and now I get it, I used to be against the insurance companies but the amount of crazy people with drivers licenses im not surprised anymore, in fact I think even for cars and age group 16-25 the insurance should be the same! and Canada MUST make it much much harder to get linceses it is simple a joke right now! and im so grateful now to have the amazing protection armor out there it is a must, atleast if we as bikers are more accident prone every year, we can walk away without a scracth each time and just have to worry about fixing up our bikes.

I don't ride my sport bike as much anymore, because the amount of times I’ve been able to save myself either from coming in contact with a car or avoiding it, supermotos are the safest bikes to have in the GTA, once you practice with them and what they are capable off, your survival rate goes up by 50% on a bike and such bikes can survive crashes very well. What I mean by this is, a few times I’ve had car make a left in front of me at an intersection, and I had no choice but to swing further to my right and get on the on coming pedestrian walkway ride it for a second or two then jump back onto the road, continuing my ride, slowing down and blowing off the steam in my helmet, pulling over at a coffee shop and thanking God im alive and calming down, before I ride again. It's hard to explain but when approachin an intersection if there is a car waiting to make a left infront of you, slow down, fingers on clutch, front brake, and foot on rear ready incase, slow down to a manageable speed which is a speed you are capable to man handling in an emergency stop, and work out and escape route each time, what i do is everytime i approach an intersection i move into the most right lane, so i can see that car waiting to turn better and to let that driver know he can't make the turn safely because im in the furthest lane to him, and since most cars who do decide to cut the turn infront of you you have better chance turning into the left lane and passing behind the left turning car, instead of being in the left lane and trying to turn right and smashing right into him, because once they turn they will never try to stop, thats what i've leanred through experience, the only thing is if you see somone coming out to make a right to go shouth in the the direction you are going and there are no cars at the intersection making lefts stay in the faster left lane. follow this and you will increase your chance of avoiding thise dangerous part of riding, i hope this could help some people in terms of ideas how to manage this risk it has helped me, good luck!

At the end of this, I think the reason why everyone here complains about the rules and laws & insurance for them being in the 16-25 range is simply because these rules and laws and high insurance premiums are because of people who are NOT like us, what I mean by that all these accidents, careless people & drivers are all non bikers, or non automotive enthusiasts! all of us are, so ofcourse we care about our bikes, cars, have this brotherhood type of thing going on in both bikers and car enthusiast and know how to gain skills in riding driving and improving it and so on and are safe about it even when were are pushing it because most of are capable of mostly managing the vehicles abilities but 90% of the population out there isn't they simply don't even know the consequences of what damage their machine can cause to others & could careless if they killed us in an accident.

The times I see women on their cell phones driving, and men too, it gets me going crazy, but what I do now is I just filter at a stop light, and when light turns green and is safe to go, im gone, I keep as much as empty space between me and traffic like that as possible and I’ve been fine. Filtering at stop lights SHOULD be LEGAL! i know now why so many countries have legalized it, it keeps two wheeled traffic ahead and away from death traps! that is why filtering saves lives, and when its leagl, bikers and two weels don't have that extra added hssle of road rage morons who try to keep you back or cut you off because you tried to filter at a stop light. before anyone argues this fact, google all countries with filtering LEGAL and you won't be surprised why people love those places and why those places are much more developed! even california has legal filtering because once a city reaches a certain traffic desity its safer for bikers to be allowed to filter and stay aways from cars as much as possible! and because it does not make sense for a biker to suffer the heat tortue and the bike in long traffic, with the helmet on alone it gets really hot! so i will always filter no matter what, it's kept me alive!

There needs to be driving school (and/or training) reform in Ontario, that's for sure.

But are any of you willing to pay more for taxes to get it? Or re-direct funds from somewhere else like (existing) Education, Health-care or public infrastructure funding?

This is going to seem racist (Flame on), but I think a lot of this has to do with immigrants. People who never had access to cars, or traffic densities as we do here, OR people who were too rich to need to drive where they're from (HK'ers) because they all had drivers take them everywhere. They come over her and have NO CLUE what they're doing, the customs of Canadian driving and our overall culture. On top of that, they go to immigrant DRIVING SCHOOLS! to learn from an instructor who will teach in their language and has essentially the same experience they do, but with a few more years their senior. Just from witnessing these clowns, they all drive WAAAAY to cautiously! which may not result in them having an accident, but could likely cause one.

BS. We need to pay people more to instruct driving, hire people with real experience and treat it more seriously. Until then our roads are bound to stay like this or get worse.

It's a combination of ****** drivers, horrible drive test centers giving out licenses, and the Toronto attitude of " Where and what I gotta do is far more important then you ". For instance, my girlfriends younger sister just got her G2 license and took her car out. When it got back, all you could smell was something burning, she drove all around town with the parking break on. My grandfather passed the written test and he can't even move his head to the left to check his blind spot. Good work though MTO, you made $200 off of them, here's hoping they don't blow into someone.

With the amount of people Toronto has, I can only assume drive test locations are backed right the **** up, and they have managers screaming at them to get people through as quick as possible considering it's all about money, it's ALWAYS about the money. Therefore, you got people on the road with the equivalent of a fishing license attempting to teach themselves how to drive on the 401. I ****ing hate going to Toronto, soon as you pass Simcoe in Oshawa it's like you just hit entered into a version of Need For Speed : Drunk and Stupid, Toronto Edition. You gotta be on 100% full alert of everything, every ******* and his dog are cutting you off, texting, chatting on the phone or tail gating you just so they can get home 4 mins earlier to watch a commercial.

If it was really all about the money they should be failing more inept people. That would be a win-win situation. Sadly what it really is about is having a meaningless small hurdle standing in your way to get a licence here. In the UK it wasn't unusual for 50% of people to fail their test the first time. I don't think it's a coincidence that I've seen way more stupid accidents here than in the UK.

good post, but unfortunately all the police are asked to do here is collect cash.

hide behind the post at dvp/richmond
lawrence and bayview
bayview extension under the bloor bridge...

the list goes on.

when the cell phone law came in, i still used my cell all the time. never got caught...its too easy.

there should be way higher fines for inattentive driving. this is what kills...

from cell phones to breakfast to makeup....weve seen it all on our bikes and it blows my mind sometimes.
if your not paying full attention to whats up ahead, you will never be able to react quickly enough to avoid a situation.

i blame the guberment

My favorite is the 2-3 police cars I see every day parked at Lakeshore & Jameson catching people disobeying the "No left turns 4-6pm" sign. That's some real good work keep us all safe right there...

truth, toronto's population is packing up to the brim, there should be more consideration for alternate vehicles

Nah they want you to pass. Then they get you with plate permits, insurance, and tickets for retarded driving, it's a vicious cycle.
