we've had several major accidents involving traffic fatalities with lengthy highway closures this past week alone

the GTA should NEVER increase speed limits, we can barely handle 100kph

we need to reduce 400-series speed limits to 90kph, and strictly enforce it

Speed is not the problem. We need to raise the bar for having a license. Maybe model it on current system for truck drivers, if you have two at-fault accidents within two years you go through the system again, and maybe throw in a basic physics class to introduce concepts like mass, momentum, and friction. Goal of any changes to the licensing system would be to reduce the number of licensed drivers in Ontario by 10%-30%.

I agree. Have an accident, take a mandatory driving class!! Frickin morons..

Speed wasn't an issue in the full retard rush hour today when 5 (that's right) people tried to sideswipe me out of my lane in one block on Lakeshore.
The issue is they can't handle their cars, not the speed. They don't see what they hit; of course they weren't looking either.

Speed limits that are too low (and aggressively enforced) increase travel times and thus boredom and fatigue, increase congestion at times when it would otherwise not be present, results in a tendency to follow too closely etc., and could very well increase the amount of distracted driving, if only to relieve boredom. That is NOT the way to go.

A large majority of the drivers on the roads have not had any feedback concerning how well or poorly they drive for DECADES.

As I understand it, the QEW chain-reaction started off with a slow driver who was struck from behind by another vehicle. Right there, you have TWO drivers who ought to have done a better job ... the slow driver who should have either (A) kept up with traffic or (B) stayed off the road in the first place, if they didn't have the skills or comfort level to be there, and the one who hit them from behind, who might not have been paying as much attention as he could have. (Having said that, years ago, we had a crash involving an employee turning into the parking lot. They slowed down, of course. The vehicle behind did not slow down but rather did a quick lane change ... instantly revealing the slow-moving car turning into the parking lot to the next driver behind, who didn't have an escape route.)

The 410 crash apparently involved someone who crossed the center median from the other direction. Why that happened isn't known.

The biggest problem is the fact that the testing centers are not watched close enough. You should have to do each of your tests at a different testing center. I have heard of people that know someone who runs a drive test center getting their licence without even doing any tests. Anyone who would have to get it that way shouldn't even be on the road and people wonder how they are driving when they get scared when pulling out into an empty lane.

I think the only way to solve these problems are to have mandatory retraining every couple years or once you reach 2 tickets in a year. Also having the police give out tickets for ANYTHING other than speeding or tickets as a result of an accident would help. Why would anyone give a ***** about merging over a solid line or signaling when no one is going to give them a ticket anyways?

your not going to fix it on this forum, and it's not going to get any better, people just don't give a crap at the best of times, so you as a rider or user of the road need to be alert all the time. i have even been rear ended by another biker in the past.

No surprise..riders aren't necessarily any better than drivers..

Why stop at 90km/hr? How about 40?

Fantino? Is that you?

back in the days of ronald regan, the usa went 55 mph across the board. they used the state troopers to cruise the interstates 3 lanes wide to enforce the speed limit, what a mess that was.

Raise the age to drive to 25. That would take the accidents waiting to happen off of the road, until they've hopefullly matured.

Have a mandatory seminar of 1 to 2 hours every time you go to renew your license where they give reminders about things which people may never have had to deal with in their lives (ie flat tires on high way etc). A lot of people go through mandatory training and do quite well with it in the beginning but get sucked into poor habits due to the rest of the road going population. Lowering the speed limit to 90 would only seek to increase the speed differential between the people who don't give a **** and drive at 140 km/h and the people who try their hardest to obey the laws and drive at the speed limit.

That there is a very ignorant statement in itself.

Does it matter if the deceased were immigrants, black, white, brown, yellow or green? the matter of the fact is that people died from a misfortunate accident.

When all else fails blame the immigrants. I wonder if thats what the natives felt when the whites came to this country.

Yeah, they thought "we have to lower the horse riding speed limits, because all these white people keep crashing their horses".

^lol or blame them for purposely backing their wagon up and demanding shilling for compensation.

But why did the tools stop their car in a driving lane of the highway. No wonder they are roadkill.
