Why one down and four up.

Someone working for Redline was a Jedi?

Of course..how else do you think he won all those cases??? "This is not the car you're looking for...you're free to go..move along..."

When I was in China in 2008 my relatives had 2 125s that were both 5 down. I had some learning to do, and there were some surprise instances where I wanted to shift up but the bike shifted down instead, over revving the bike. The wife was not amused. I also learned to do 4 up, very common in rural China.

I prefer the reverse pattern as well, 1 up, 5 down. All my bikes for the last 14 years have been converted to this pattern.

Personally, I prefer reverse shift pattern. Fortunately, most bikes of the type that I prefer (sport) are designed so that the linkage can be flipped over nowadays.
Hey Brian, it was easy to convert my 08 R6 to GP Shift (just swapped the stock shift linkage around), but I had a look at my 07 R1 the other day and it's totally different! Not possible to do it with the stock hardware I guess? :(
